This recording sheds light on a hitherto unknown aspect of the output of Buxtehude's works. All the pieces are linked by the leitmotiv of the ciaccona, an ostinato bass figure which gives the music an infectiously joyful, driving strength and forms the ideal basis for free improvisatory playing in the upper parts. |
