np: 007. KISS - [Alive - The Millenium Concert (BB special) #07] Do You Love Me

QUOTE:
Worth Re-Buying, January 16, 2007
Reviewer: Michael Ladano "Rock Expert" (Kitchener, ON)
I agree with the majority of the reviewers in saying that Alive I, Alive II, and III all have improved sound on this reissue. Since you're a Kiss fan (otherwise, why are you reading this?) I know that will make you happy. If you're like me, and still play your old vinyl copy of Alive just for "that sound", I think you'll be happy here.

I have the version with the two bonus tracks, 2000 Man & God of Thunder. I'm glad I got some rarities here that not too many people will get to own. I'm also glad that the 1975 single edit of "Rock N' Roll All Nite" was included. Some people are crazy about collecting all those classic-era single cuts, so here's one for you in wonderfully remastered glory. But wait! There's more! You also get your "Take It Off" from the Japanese CD and US vinyl of Alive III! I bought a copy on coloured vinyl over a decade ago just for that one track. I won't tell you what I paid for it!

The Millenium Concert (formally known as Alive IV until another album used that name) is a mixed bag for me. The tempos sound off a bit on some tracks, and I hear a lot of overdubs. Granted all three previous Alives are heavily overdubbed and studio tracked. However, on the previous three, I just couldn't hear it (much). I can hear it here, especially in the vocals. I hear a couple Pauls singing together on a few songs. The same thing bugged me about their Live in Las Vegas DVD. It's a shame, because my favourite Kiss concerts are bootlegs. The band sounds best when sloppy and making mistakes, it's just more rock n' roll. It's true. This band is not at their best when polished to perfecttion.

The tracks are cool. Mind you there's some overlap with previous Alives and the Psycho-Circus Live CD. In fact I think 2000 Man might be the only track that's unavailable live elsewhere...no, that's on the Unplugged CD. So there you go. However, it is very cool hearing the original lineup doing later-lineup songs like Heaven's On Fire, Lick It Up, and I Love It Loud.

Packaging-wise, this is ace. You get all the pages from the booklets from the previous CD and vinyl editions, plus new comments from the band and associates (taken from the book Kiss: Behind The Mask). You get lots of pictures, and each album's album cover has been reproduced inside. Even The Millenium Concert's prototype cover is here. Killer!

My only concern was, with all the material (originally from six CDs) squeezed onto four, would there be tampering with the tracks in terms of editing out talking or anything else? So far I haven't detected any tampering like that.

Bottom line: Even if you own previous Alives, I think it's safe to say you'll be happier if you own this. Four discs of live Kiss might seem excessive to some, but think about it: Isn't Kiss a live band?
