Blue Floyd, a band created to express progressive interpretations of classic Pink Floyd songs with a serious blues emphasis... promises to musically portray classic Pink Floyd songs unlike any other tribute band to date.
The brainchild of Michael Gaiman, who previously assembled Jazz Is Dead, a potent jazz-rock band that performed Grateful Dead songs with a Jazz emphasis, Blue Floyd features Marc Ford on lead guitars and vocals, formerly a guitarist with The Black Crowes; Johnny Neel on keyboards, harp and vocals, formerly with the Allman Brothers Band; Berry Oakley on bass and vocals, formerly with the Robby Krieger Band and Matt Abts on drums, formerly with Government Mule and the Dickey Betts Band.
By pioneering an improvisational blues collaboration with an eclectic mix of acclaimed, contemporary musicians, Blue Floyd attempts to manifest the classic compositions of the legendary Pink Floyd band into their primal, elemental form - the Blues. As much an homage to the influence of Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters as a re-discovery of both Pink Floyd classics and rarities, Blue Floyd plays classic rock and roll songs, heard again as if for the first time.
Born from London's 'swinging 60s,' post-British Invasion, art school scene, Pink Floyd became rock music's greatest, most enduring musical phenomenon. The classic band had its origins in a college band called Sigma 6, comprised of guitarist Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason, keyboardist Richard Wright and their friends, all of whom had studied architecture at the Regent Street Polytechnic Institute in London. Through several name changes, including T-Set, The Meggadeaths (no relation to the latter day metal band), and finally The Abdabs, the latter band playing at school parties, covering blues and R&B tunes. Blue Floyd draws from these roots, especially Pink Floyd's love of blues. Blue Floyd's set list changes nightly with songs never played the same way twice.
