Frijid Pink

Biography by Jason Ankeny
Detroit hard rockers Frijid Pink formed in 1967, originally comprised of singer Kelly Green, guitarist Gary Ray Thompson, bassist Tom Harris, keyboardist Larry Zelanka and drummer Richard Stevers. After two years of relentless touring throughout the southeast Michigan area, the group — substituting Harris for new bassist Thomas Beaudry — signed with the Parrot label in 1969; although their first two singles, "Tell Me

Frijid Pink. 1970

Review by Bruce Eder
Frijid Pink's self-titled debut album is a slashing, seriously soulful example of late-'60s Detroit rock near its best. Although they never registered with critics or rock historians the way MC5 or the Stooges did, Frijid Pink had obviously learned something in the course of two years on the road, and with Michael Valvano producing, they were able to channel the excitement of their work onto the grooves of this album very neatly. Those who bought the number seven single "House of the Rising

Review by Richie Unterberger
Frijid Pink's second album was so-so hard rock on the verge of becoming heavy metal. Most of the songs were built on rote blues-rock riffs, with the macho bluster paced by Kelly Green's husky voice, which generally tried too hard and was too full of itself. The compositions addressed the themes of thrusting romance ("Black Lace"), quasi-countercultural utopianism ("Sing a Song for Freedom," which sounded influenced by "American Woman"-era Guess Who

1973. Earth Omen

Review by Joe Viglione
Two albums after their Top Ten 1970 hit single, "House of the Rising Sun," this band is almost like Michael Tegza's version of Love Craft when they could've gone in a Blue Cheer direction and expanded their horizons. It's not that there is no compelling music on Earth Omen. The title track, with a classy, ecological chorus, is torpedoed by hokey lyrics in the verse. "Sailor" isn't bad either, and the musicianship goes from good to very good, while the cover concept, featuring

Not Bad, But The Older Albums Are Better..., May 3, 2002
Reviewer: C. Potocki (Lansing, Illinois United States)
Unfortunately by this time, Frijid Pink were already past their prime and the point of no return when this album was released, and it turned out to be their swan song. Drummer Rich Stevers is the only original member left, and new vocalist Jo Baker is great, but not nearly as great as Kelly Green was. The best songs on this CD are "Money Man", "Gonna Get It Yet", and the humorous "There Ain't No Rock And Roll In China". Overall, not a bad effort, but I'll take their excellent debut album over this anytime.

I was surprised at how good this record was. "Gonna Get it Yet" was my favorite song but actually the more I listened to the CD the more the rest of the songs grew on me. "Money Man" is a catchy tune and the cover of Chuck Berry's "School Day" rocks. Jo Baker's vocals are great and Craig Webb smokes on guitar.

1. Money Man
2. Put It In Your Pocket
3. Potrait
4. Gonna Get It Yet
5. Paula In My Dreams
6. A Day Late A Dollar Short
7. Got To Go Back (San Francisco Bay)
8. Take Me To Your Palace
9. School Day
10. Lovely Lady
11. (There Ain't No) Rock And Roll In China
