Review (Wiki)
Houses of the Holy is the fifth album by English rock band Led Zeppelin, released by Atlantic Records on 28 March 1973. The album title is a dedication by the band to their fans who appeared at venues they dubbed "Houses of the Holy." It was the first Led Zeppelin album to not be, at least unofficially, titled after the band. The album represents a milestone for the band, as they began to use more layering and production techniques in recording their songs.

Although Houses of the Holy initially received mixed reviews, it has since become regarded by critics as one of Led Zeppelin's finest albums. The album provided notable additions to the band's catalogue, including "Over the Hills and Far Away", "Dancing Days", "The Song Remains the Same", "D'yer Mak'er", "No Quarter" and "The Ocean", and it has sold over 11 million copies in the United States. In 2003, the album was ranked number 149 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

:hi:

Some feel this "un-remastered" version is the best, since it is the closest to the original master tape as released and heard back in 1969. People seek this version because they they are "flat transfers" of existing master tapes, and they want "the sound" that brought them to the album in the first place.

What are "Target CDs"?
Target CDs are first pressings released by WEA (Warner-Elektra-Atlantic) in the early-to-mid 1980s. They were manufactured in either West Germany or Japan for distribution in the US before domestic pressing facilities were online. Target CDs derive their name from the design used by WEA, which resembles a gunsight, crosshairs, or a target. These early CDs are often readily identified by the striking colors used on the label side.

Target CDs are collectibles to certain music enthusiasts since they represent first pressings and are, therefore, remnants of the early days of the "Compact Digital Disc". Aside from the historical significance, many music enthusiasts feel that these first pressings offer superior fidelity to later remasters. The reason for this is that many Target CDs were prepared by taking a "flat transfer" from the original masters as opposed to making unnecessary EQ adjustments. Many more recent remasters show evidence of "EQ tweaking".

While Target CDs are relatively rare, it is possible to find them at low prices in used music stores. The fact is that few people realize the significance of these CDs. As a result, personnel at most used music stores throw them in the used CD bins like any other used CDs.

I know Keith, he is always after the Target CDs ;)

ps
i'm also planning to release non-target unremastered versions of LZ studio albums, which many ppl agree, sound better than ANY remaster :)

I once owned the non-target not-remastered version of LZ IV. I gave it away
(after I got the remaster), because the stereo channels were reversed!

really? beacuse some of the remasters lack the bass and clarity comparing to the flat transfers..

That might be, but reversed stereo channels are a pain, especially with
headphones. :music:

These days that's no problem anymore, it's easy to correct this flaw!

Super Sound.

Posted by: OlCh on 30-03-2006, 23:19
а что скажет товарищ runo? :hi:

Posted by: -=Zepplock=- on 31-03-2006, 08:48

I have three versions of this album. - Target, Atlantic original (Barry's mastering) and George Marino's remaster version.

All three versions have different mastering.

Posted by: bertox on 19-11-2008, 06:16
The 'Targets' Cds have the same mastering that the masters used for first Vinyls has?

Posted by: yury_usa on 19-11-2008, 06:30

Target is identical to Atlantic Original. It's still Barry Diament mastering, there shouldn't be any difference other than lvl shift.

bertox
I sure hope that is the case, unless Barry had a different source :)

Posted by: bertox on 19-11-2008, 07:10
well.., the source..., only Barry knows where from come...

what's you means with 'lvl shift'? Volume up?
