Going under the guise ‘The Modern Congress’, creator Tim Rollinson (ex DIG) delivers ‘The Hidden Soul of Harmony’, a smooth seductress that aims (and succeeds) to tease and tantalise lovers of contemporary jazz.
Creatively composed and expertly produced this album moves gracefully between various styles and techniques whilst maintaining its air of charm, sophistication and intrigue.
Each of the eleven tracks have a particular yet subtle focus, and as they take hold of your senses you will notice a mixture of gentle sax and tenderly trained piano hooks (The Hidden Soul of Harmony), cheeky beats and breathy vocals (A Little Rain), smokey brooding bass (Rise Up) and Asian infused rhythms (Tabula Rasa).
Digital effects take hold by the midway point; well-paced beats sit perfectly alongside dubbed grooves and stirring synths (Gold Bug) and looming basslines are complimented by frantic keys and mystical instrumentation (Vanishing Point).
The musicians involved in this album include Adam Armstrong, Barney McAll, Tim Otto, Phil Slater, Neilsen Gough, Paul Cutlan, John Mackey and Clayton Doley, all of who are magnificently backed by vocalists Tina Harrod and Inga Liljestrom.
Mixed at ‘BigJesusBurger’ studios, ‘The Hidden Soul of Harmony’ is a well-balanced combination of tradition and modernity. It is sophisticated without being daunting to outsiders, and above all a sheer delight to indulge in.
