Biography by AMG
Leopold Anthony Stokowski, one of the true conducting luminaries of the twentieth century, was born in London in 1882. His father was Polish, his mother Irish, but he was raised as an Englishman. His famous, vaguely foreign, accent somehow appeared later in his life. (It is widely believed this was an affectation, as was his name, adopted in place of the less exotic-sounding "Leo Stokes.") The young Stokowski was a precocious musician, and as a child learned to play the violin, piano, and organ with apparently little effort. At the age of thirteen, he became the youngest person to have been admitted to the Royal College of Music.
By eighteen, Stokowski had been appointed organist and choirmaster at St. James', Piccadilly. He attended Queen's College, Oxford, receiving a Bachelor of Music degree in 1903. He moved to the United States in 1905, but returned to Europe each summer for further musical studies in Berlin, Munich, and Paris

Great Performances!, July 24, 2001
Reviewer: Brian H. Williams (Manteca, CA United States)
This cd contains what is possibly the most exciting, emotionally charged version of Tanhauser available! Not to mention the absolutely brilliant version of Lizt's Hungarian Rhapsody. Stokowski pulls and pushes the tempi that it makes the rhapsody wonderfully exciting. The sonics are brilliant, warm and full of presence! The Moldau is another great performance, possibly the best available. Those who admire Bernstein's Moldau on Sony, hear this one, and you'll never go back to Bernstein! No blaring mention Bernstein piccolo in this recording! Highly reccomended!

Phenominal!, March 28, 1999
Reviewer: A music fan
This is the true essence of what made Leopold Stokowski famous. A rich, warm sound and 100% Romantic!
The sound of the orchestra is absoultely extraordinary, despite an occassional "sloppy entrance". Yet while we have the ability to generate "computer accurate" music recordings, this is certainly not what true art is about.
I have yet to come across a CD that has the ability to generate a greater emotional response than this one.

Highly recommended!
