Ain't it funny how things work out sometimes. I was originally attracted to the music of Tomasz Stanko for its arid, minimalist and stream-of-consciousness tendencies and wound up liking C.O.C.X., arguably his most melodic effort, as much or more than any of the others. And hopefully others who hear this will come to agree that this surprise favorite is a hidden gem. The best here is the tremendous Gama, which sort of overshadows the rest of the best, and is a tune which should have you listening over and again. Those familiar with and approving of some of the post-Tijuana Brass work of Herb Alpert and some of the late 1970s work of Freddie Hubbard will find a lot to like here. Among the other songs that will send your spirits soaring are Mademoiselle "Ka", Babylon Samba, Mr. DD, the enigmatic title cut, the wildly swaying Kameleon, and the punchy Fioletowy Liquor. The only two I don't like are the mindlessly percussive ooga-booga Jose and Lak, and the aimless bass noodling of Song For Pula. Fortunately, both of them are mercifully short. Those last two unworthies aside, my only real complaints about C.O.C.X. are that it badly needs remastering (you'll have to raise the volume) and that the cover is all you get as far as any information about the music and the musicians. Beyond those quibbles, this comes highly recommended to anyone who appreciates some great jazz! (stanko.polishjazz.com)
Aha, C.O.C.X. That word not necessary conjures up images of relaxation, stress-relief or healthy living with no drugs nor booze - especially when you consider the date when this album was recorded (1983), which is probably somewhere around 'the darkest' period in Stanko's body of work. But - surprise surprise - the main promise of C.O.C.X. is just that - relaxation and stress-relief. Stanko's romantically rocking trumpet, Apostolis' guitar solos on their way from Greece to Jamaica, J.A Torress' Latin congas, Rek's swinging bass - all those integrands create an experience which tend to be everybody's favorite, even among the folks who are not especially keen on post-electric Miles grooves. For those times when you just want to be noncommittal about you music selection, that would be a perfect record to choose, especially in company of well chilled bottle of Pino Grigio or New Zeeland's Sauvignon Blanc.
