It had been a while since I heard a record of his and I remembered his stuff as being loose and swing-beaty but a bit samey. But after seeing "Receiver" from this album on MTV2 I've been waiting to see if hes progressed as much as the single suggested. And he has. It’s the same sort of style throughout but he does it incredibly well and has obviously developed a brilliant ear for samples over the years as well as becoming a bit of an expert knob twiddler. Opening track "The Premise" is a typical opener for this kind of record, a string of samples ( some showing hes got a sense of humour) laid over a classy loose breakbeat. It then moves into "Air with jazzy flutes" territory before track 4 "Thick Stew" which sounds very like Mouse on Mars which is no bad thing. "Natural Suction" sounds very Mike Paradinas ,a dark tune laid over drum n bass drums, but this isnt surprising as Wagon Christ was on Warp and Rephlex for a good while. Title track "Musipal" sounds like Nightmares on Wax mixed with the Avalanches and features a very catchy and jazzy sample of someone whistling. "Receiver" is the standout track though, with its bent orchestra hits and soul diva samples held together with a brilliant tight beat. This has to be one of the most consistent albums I’ve ever heard, there isn't a bad track on it. It keeps reminding me of mu-ziq though, rite down to the album titles ("Tomorrow Acid" or "Thick Stew" anyone?) but I’m not about to criticise anyone for that. A very well put together sample based record which doesn’t overdo it at any point. No mean feat. [alternativecuts.co.uk] |
