This is Cristopher Simpson's shocking book Science of Coercion - Communication Research & Psychological Warfare 1945-1960 (1994) which documents in detail the relationship between academic reseach in mass communications and its use in clandestine military psychological warfare between 1945 and 1960. Find out how has the US power elite used techniques of mass communication to wage a psychological war against its own population to achieve their desired goals. While the majority of population is completely unaware of these subtle methods of warfare the elites are using it to socially engineer and mold the minds of population everyday right in front of their noses using mass communication means such as media, education, etc. Includes a major reference index which will surely satisfy even the most demanding researcher which wishes to dwell further into this largely unknown to public but highly developed science which is sure to play a dominant role in the future. 190 pages. A must read for everyone.

Some book reviews:
Science: "A concise, cogently argued, and lucidly written account remarkably free of contemporary communcations jargon... By piercing through the subterfuges, euphemisms, and outright deceptions of the Cold War era, Simpson has recovered a portion of history long forgotten or repressed."
James W. Carey, Columbia University: "At last, a thoroughly researched, well-documented critical history of the relation between the U.S. government and the academic community in the creation and development of mass communication and research. Enormously useful and clarifying."
Noam Chomsky, MIT: "Simpson's essay on psychological warfare adds new dimensions to our understanding of the important question of control of throught within democratic societies, and by their institutions. It also provides and intriguing picture of the relation between state power and the intellectual community, including the academic world and professions."
Dan Schiller, University of California: "A sobering account of institutional and intellectual complicity in Cold War counterinsurgency. Indispensable as coerrective to prevailing views of the history and purposes of communication study."
American Journalism: "Simpson provides an invaluable service in Science of Coercion by carefully documenting relationships between communication research and clandestine U.S. government military operations from 1945 to 1960... This book is particularly important."
Journal of Communication: "Enormously useful and revealing... Simpson's solid analysis should be required reading in graduate research classes."
