Tarquinio Merula (1595 - 1665) Complete Organ Works Label: Tactus, TC.591301 Year: 2000 Performer: Francesco Cera - historic organs of Bologna The special kind of energy and inspiration in this music can perhaps be attributed to Tarquinio Merula‘s unstable character. His sacred vocal works are full of references to secular music: the psalms and motets use a "romanesca" bass and a whole mass in composed on a "ruggiero" bass; they include curious devices such as vocal "ostinati" and enigmatic canons. In the 17th century more and more instrumental music began to be performed during mass, so it was natural for composers to use musical elements which were common to secular compositions (with an ease uncommon to our present-day concept of sacred) to express the intimate emotional messages of sacred texts. Merula’s ingenious inventive vein is also apparent in his music for organ, permeating both the common musical genre of that time and "less modern" ones with vivacity and a search for new ideas. Tarquinio Merula is considered one of the best experimental composers of the 17th- century Italian Sonata de camera and, over time, his instrumental compilations have gradually gone on to form part of the repertoire of modern performers of Baroque music. By contrast, his keyboard music, and especially his organ music, has been less explored, since many of his works are thought to be lost. For much of his life- approximately between 1590 and 1665-Merula was organist and maestro di cappella at the churches of Cremona and Bergamo, and served at the court of the King of Poland for five years. In recent years some short but important manuscript fragments have come to light, complementing the complete edition of Merula's organ music prepared by Alan Curtis. Francesco Cera's recording presents 19 of these fragments for organ. These chromatic works will surprise the listener, not only in regard to the virtuosity of the keyboard composers of the 17th century, but especially the density of sound which characterises Merula's "vocal-style" works. The canzona La Monteverde was composed in homage to his great contemporary and is taken from the 1615 compilation of Canzoni per suonare, for a wide range of musical instruments. Francesco Cera is one example of a virtuoso musician with an extensive cultural training. His choice of the two Bolognese historical instruments used here is very convincing: a brilliant 1526 organ by the organ-builder Fachetti, an instrument maker from Cremona, played by Merula himself for some years; and a positive organ constructed by Carlo Traeri in 1675, with a sweet and melancholic sound.
