Emperors New Clothes are from Newcastle Upon Tyne, a band formed by Andy Knight (Horns & Sax) and Luke Hannam (Bass) who merged their differing passions for punk and dub sounds and ambient jazz to create the band's trademark and distinctive organic explorations. In the summer of 1992 the Emperors relocated from the North East to South London and had grown to a four piece. Joined by Mike Restall (Trumpet) and Paul Keyse (Guitar), their first appearance on vinyl came with the track 'Nature Never Repeats Itself', featured on Acid Jazz's Totally Wired 10 compilation. The tune was picked up and given considerable airplay by Kiss and JFM and became a club favourite. Come the Winter of 1992, three days of downtime became available at the Acid Jazz West End studios during which time the band recorded a complete album. On the strength of this impressive debut set the band signed a five album deal with Acid Jazz and their album entitled 'Unsettled Life' was released in November 1993. The Emperors toured the length of the UK throughout 1993, playing as many as 50 gigs including the 1993 Glastonbury Festival, to a cross-over crowd of hippy jazz grunge fans drawn by their sharp, intense and moody improvisations. In March 1994 their single 'Unsettled Life', lifted from the album, was remixed by The Underdog (rather happening mixer of Shara Nelson, Pharcyde and House of Pain fame), taking the band to new heights of critical acclaim and popularity. The band's second album 'Wisdom And Lies' was released in April 1995 telling tales of the introspective. An album that bridges both camps from the live skool to the ever-popular programmed blunted beats style of Tricky, Massive Attack and the MoWax crew. Since the recording of 'Wisdom And Lies' the Emperor's line-up has altered, losing Mike Restall, and adding experimental and underground DJ Ian Girdlestone. The Emperors have burnt their bridges, and are making further headway into the tripped out world of eccentricity.
