British budget reissue label Gallerie's A Portrait of Dinah Shore is a 48-track, two-CD set containing a miscellaneous, nearly undocumented collection of recordings made between 1940 and 1948. (Annotations consist of song titles and songwriting credits — which are not always accurate — a date assigned to each title, and a brief, general essay by Fred Dellar.) Shore initiated her recording career in 1940, at first releasing records on RCA Victor's discount Bluebird label and then on the main label; in 1946, she switched to Columbia Records. The set is spotty on Shore's Victor catalog, including some of her major hits, but omitting others. With the beginning of the highly successful Columbia years, starting with "Shoo-Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy," however, the set reliably, and chronologically, includes most of her hits of 1946-48, among them the chart-toppers "The Gypsy," "Anniversary Song," and "Buttons and Bows." In some cases, the included recordings are airchecks, complete with applause, not the original studio recordings, though this is not noted. The set presumably cuts off at 1948 due to a 50-year copyright limit in Europe that makes these recordings public domain as of the album's 1999 release date. Though the back cover bears a stamp reading, "Superior sound quality," the sound quality is in fact mediocre, with audible hiss and an occasionally muffled sound suggesting that these recordings were transferred from vinyl discs. So, for your money, you get the young Dinah Shore singing some of her hits and some standards ("Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Somebody Loves Me," "Stardust," "The Man I Love," etc.) on a generous, but not very well organized collection.
