Sleeve notes by Steve Kaiser Congratulations, you are holding a copy of one of the most fascinating and diverse guitar collections ever created. The scope of the music contained on this CD ranges from Jazz and Brazilian guitar to modern classical and Piedmont blues. We've even included two amazingly authentic Bulerias from our Gypsy Flamenco CD. The "Jazz" guitars are seven string hollow bodied unamplified electrics played by Bucky and John Pizzarelli. "Stompin' At the Savoy" from Live From Studio A (JDl) features father and son in a fiercely swingin' duet. Also from the same recording is Duke Ellington's "Do Nothing 'Till You Hear From Me" which features the whole band. In startling contrast, are two tracks from recordings by Badi Assad, "Quase um funk p'ra Badi" from Rhythms (JD137) and "Num Pagode em Planaltina" from Solo (JD99). Badi is a lovely young Brazilian classical guitar virtuoso who uses voice, guitar and unusual percussive effects to create her own unique sound. We also have real, honest to goodness Piedmont blues guitar and harmonica from John Cephas and Phil Wiggins contributing "The Saint Louis Blues" and "Blake's Rag" from their Bluesmen CD QD89). Ralph Towner plays the twelve string guitar with Oregon - the pre-eminent jazz-fusion band of our time. Combining elements of jazz, folk, classical and world music, Oregon's music is dazzlingly eclectic. The piece we chose for this collection, "Sicilian Walk" from the CD Beyond Words (JD130) highlights Ralph's mastery of this unusual instrument. Legendary Brazilian composer and guitarist Luiz Bonfa gives us two very intimate and sensitive performances from Non Stop to Brazil JD29), "Danca India" and "Non-Stop to Brazil." Bruce Dunlap hails from the hills outside of Sante Fe, New Mexico. His music has a beauty and majestic quality that is reflective of his home. The pieces are "Spokes" from About Home JD59) and "Heckle and Jeckle" and "Just One Feather" both from The Rhythm of Wings (JD92). Brazilian guitar virtuosos Romero Lubambo and Raphael Rabello contribute two beautiful tracks from their recording Shades of Rio (JD85); "Melancia" and "Crab Peddler". The collection rounds out with two exciting flamenco guitar pieces performed by Carlos Heredia and his authentic gypsy flamenco group; "Chachipen" (Good Things) and "De Volao" (Spur of the Moment) from Gypsy Flamenco (W0126). Both tracks utilize the Bulerias rhythmic pattern. Popular at flamenco festivals in southern Spain, a Bulerias is composed of 10 different variations of a 12 beat rhythmic pattern, posing a challenge to even the most versatile of flamenco artists. Palmas (rthymic hand clapping) and passionate vocals, allow you to close your eyes and immerse yourself in this wonderful and exotic musical idiom. For all who love the sound and music of the acoustic guitar, we offer this amazing sampler, so varied and original as to almost defy categorization. Enjoy! |
