Kobe-based Narushisa Matsuoka started out in the early eighties as a rare groove Dj.Trained as a classic piano player, Matsuoka soon feels the limits of just playing records to a crowd and sets up his own acid-jazz combo Modern Conception. Their somewhat precious sound took a raw turn in the mid-eighties.
Influenced by artists such as Aphex Twin and Plug, Dj Matsuoaka works became more drum & bass inspired but still dwelling on the musical legacy of jazz pioneers such as Thelonious Monk. His latest solo efforts ( on JCR and Artefact ) are very close to the Nu-Jazz sound conveyed in Europe by bands such as Jazzanova or Freeform Arkestra..
