Сам композитор предпочитает называть свою многогранную музыку "Кинематографический New Age" или "Новый импрессионизм". Начиная с выхода в 1987 г. дебютного альбома "Valley in the Clouds", его диски попадали в первую десятку хит-парада журнала Billboard в своем жанре девять раз, больше чем чьи-либо еще. Причем его альбомы дважды были на первом месте ("Citizen of Time" 1990 и "In The Wake of the Wind" 1991), а за альбом 1991 года он был удостоен премии Grammy.
