QUOTE
We often extol the virtues of true Heavy Metal on such luminaries as MANOWAR and HAMMERFALL. After all the do live, breath and drink Metal in all its sweaty head banging glory however there is one band that can claim to eclipse even these mighty warriors. A band so ensconced in the very fabric, the very make up of Heavy Metal they make the term fashionable redundant.

Germany’s GRAVE DIGGER deserves recognition for simply sticking to the formula of riff heavy chorus filled Heavy Metal: a veritable cauldron of sound that has carried them since the early 80’s. A career spanning twenty five years they have remained stoically fused to the 80’s denim and leather clique. And by the looks of this performance from Sao Paula in May 2005 it seems that the band could continue for many years to come.

At its heart Heavy Metal is about great riffs and let me tell you Manni Schmidt’s riffing is awesome. He truly is a man mountain in the art of delivering crushing back breaking guitar motifs. Not one song goes by that Schmidt hasn’t nailed your brain to the floor. The simplicity of ‘’The Grave Dancer’’, the speed of ‘’Desert Rose’’ or the power of ‘’Dark of the Sun’’ are consummate Metal riffing that few can rival. And that leads to the often critiqued voice of Chris Boltendahl. A man most probably feed glass when he was a child. His gravel fuelled rasp is not to every one’s liking but without his unique vocal tilt GRAVE DIGGER would just sound that bit less special.

So if it’s Heavy Metal you want you’ll get it in spades with GRAVE DIGGER.
