October 1990: Hugo Reyne, known until then as the 'recorder-player of Les Arts Florissants', presented the first-ever completed recording of the Symphonies pour les soupers du Roy with his ensemble La Simphonie du Marais, founded three years previously. Here are the highlights of this recording which rehabilitated Delalande's music with full historical accuracy. It is just as relevant and up-to-date today!

These Simphonies pour les soupers du roy (Symphonies for the King's Suppers) were imposing works from the court of Louis XIV, more festive banquet music than Tafelmusik. Yet the name of Michel-Richard Delalande is less well known than that of other French Baroque figures, partly because of the manuscript situation - the instrumentation of these instrumental suites is a matter of informed guesswork. A few of Delalande's short trumpet pieces, presented as a Concert de trompettes as a curtain-raiser, have become staples of concerts by Maurice Andre and other stars of the trumpet. The Simphonies themselves awaited reconstruction, and this 1990 recording, here reissued in Harmonia Mundi's midprice Musique d'Abord series, went a long way toward filling the bill. The listener is treated to three suites of widely varying structure: the 12th suite has seven short movements, the fifth 13, and the seventh suite, subtitled "'Airs du ballet flore ou de Trianon," is in two movements, each with multiple sections. All, however, are spectacular pieces with diverse instrumentation, including strings, trumpets, recorders, oboe, bassoon, chalumeau, theorbo, harpsichord, and various percussion instruments including, in some cases, castanets. The effect is striking for ears accustomed to the terraced sound of Italian Baroque music, and the performances by La Simphonie du Marais under Hugo Reyne clarify the textures without losing a festive air. The booklet, in French and English, is informative and even provides a sketch of the sequence of events that occurred as the Sun King sat down to his evening meal. The overall result is a still-innovative album that's suitable for any party, royal or not.
