QUOTE | "With a sultry, crystalline voice, impeccable diction and a sense of pitch-perfect intonation that would make Ella Fitzgerald proud, Jenny Evans is the leading female jazz singer in Germany," Time Magazine wrote in 1996. An educated choral singer (whose first love was the contrapuntal motets of Orlando di Lasso), London-born Jenny Evans studied piano as a girl with renowned harpsichorist Trevor Pinnock. In 1976 she came to Munich (Germany) and started singing jazz classics, writing song lyrics, and developing a swinging live show. She worked with top-players like Al Grey, Buddy Tate, Benny Bailey and Dusko Goykovich and toured even Japan and Russia. She also graduated with an M.A. in linguistics, performed as an actress in theater and TV, was a featured singer in stage musicals ("Blood Brothers", "Educating Rita", "Kiss Me, Kate"), and even led her own jazz club, "Jenny's Place". If there ever was an allround talent in show biz, her name is Jenny Evans.
Funny or melancholic, enthralling or intimate, glamorous or shy: Jenny Evans changes her role with each new song. Her ballads are intense, her mid-tempos delicate, her up-tempos whirling, and when it comes to scatting she commands improvisatory freedom like a horn-player. "Shiny Stockings," her previous ENJA release, was appreciated not only by the jazz press but also by Diner's Club Magazine, British Billboard, and German lifestyle magazine Max (highest rating). Her new album, "Girl Talk," offers a high-class live performance recorded in 1993. Accom-panied by a fine working trio of young German talent, Jenny Evans presents deep-felt versions of standard ballads along with very personal renditions of modern-jazz classics by Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins and Bobby Timmons. Her cool phrasing and individual style make this disc a definite highlight of today's vocal jazz. |
