For anyone who thought that Nordic music went from Sibelius to Abba with nothing much in-between, then Nordic Nights will come as a pleasant surprise. This 16-track disc, the second compilation on the Late Junction label, has been put together by LJ presenter and Nordic buff Fiona Talkington.

Life for the inhabitants of Norway, Sweden and Finland is dominated by the sea--as Talkington writes in her sleeve note: "The sea may be for swimming, for sailing or for walking on in winter, but it is always to be respected." Recordings of water transport the listener to Scandinavia by providing the opening and closing tracks which frame a diverse collection of pieces which give a flavour of the Nordic people and their music.

Several tracks represent the culture of these northern lands--a heartfelt song sung across the water by fishermen's wives contrasts with a rip-roaring wedding dance played by a group of fiddlers. Others illustrate the wide-ranging influences on Nordic musicians, which range from gospel to jazz via Jimi Hendrix. The musical variety is immense, yet there is not a weak link to be found; the album's only fault is that it encourages its owner to buy the CDs of these outstanding artists.Amazon
