QUOTE
For the last three years the world at large has been keen to proclaim the fact that rock, metal, call-it-what-you-will is dead. With no radio play, no rotation whatsoever as far as TV is concerned and general disdain from the media at large, rock music in the 90s has survived, diversified and grown stronger.
If you're reading these notes then the chances are that YOU made that possible. YOU bought the albums, gig tickets and T'-shirts, forcing bands like Machine Head and Fear Factory into the UK Top 30. YOU proclaimed your allegiance and scoured the pages of Kerrang! Every Wednesday for your weekly fix of what's happening on Planet Rock. For supporting the scene that supports YOU, YOU can be proud.
This compilation is a reflection of that scene as seen through the eyes of possibly the world's largest independently-minded rock label, Roadrunner Records.
For well over a decade, Roadrunner Records has bought you some of the most innovative rock bands from around the planet. From Brazil they bought you Sepultura, from Brooklyn they gave you Dog Eat Dog, both very different bands who - like the title of this CD suggests share an attitude that has seen them succeed against the odds.
Half of this sampler will trigger off fond memories. Dog Eat Dog, Type O Negative, Fear Factory, Machine Head [the late?] Sepultura and Biohazard are almost household names for any self respecting rock fan. Included here are three ultra-rare tracks from three of those old friends.
Machine Head's Real Lies'/Fuck It All [demo Version]' has never officially been available in the UK other than on the tape trading circuit. Fear Factory's New Breed [revolutionary Designed Mix]' is only available on the now-deleted digi-pack of Demanufacture'.
Sepultura's live cover of Motorhead's scathing Orgasmatron' was originally a rare B'-side of the Arise' single. Elsewhere on this CD you'll find tracks by bands who are on the verge of greater things. LA's Coal Chamber have already delivered a classic track in Loco', New York's Vision Of Disorder are close behind with Zone Zero', while Obituary reveal a new streamlined sound on Threatening Skies'. A personal fave Is Karma To Burn's Bobbi, Bobbi, Bobbi - I'm not God' which showcases the weirdsters in their full brow-furrowing glory.
There's an injection of new blood from rap metal posse Shootyz Groove [their track Anchor' comes from their recent Hipnosis' set], while Holland's avant-garde troupe Kong deliver the time-challenging instrumental TroubleMuter' from their recent uplifting offering, EarMinded'.
If all this isn't enough then check out the slew of unreleased tracks by East Coast scary blokes Life 0f Agony and Ray Cappo's hardcore vets Shelter, both of which bode well for their new albums due out very soon. A final tip of the hat goes to North Carolina's leadfoot who have to be one of the finds of the year. Featuring former Corrosion Of Conformity [circa Blind'] men Karl Agell [vocals] and Phil Swisher [bass], this is the first opportunity for UK fans to dig deep into Leadfoot's unique blend of crunchy trucker hard rock.
So there yoo have it. A brief, meandering overview of what's on offer on this value-for-mayhem sampler. The past, the present and the future of rock music as we know it all for the price of a couple of pints.
Proof that rock is far from dead and that those who think it is should get their heads outta their ass and get into the 90s. Til the next volume of Attitude'. Keep it real. (Phil Alexander, Editor, Kerrang! Magazine - July 97)
