The Penguin Guide To Jazz On CD, 7th Edition Richly and resonantly recorded in the magnificent acoustic of Salisbury Cathedral but flat and desiccated for all that. Surman’s exchanges with Taylor are episodically involving, but the vocal settings have an overpowering quality that neutralizes some iron-hard instrumental ideas. It has always been understood that Surman’s writing drew much from the Anglican tradition, and here is the proof. Unfortunately, in making the influence explicit he loses much of the subtlety that informed earlier records.

An ECM / BBC Radio 3 co-production.
