Review: by Ben Davies Mayall's first post-Bluesbreakers album saw the man returning to his roots after the jazz/blues fusion that was Bare Wires. Blues from Laurel Canyon is a blues album, through and through. Testimony to this is the fact that there's a guitar solo only 50 seconds into the opening track. Indeed, Mayall dispersed the entire brass section for Blues from Laurel Canyon, and instead chose the solid but relatively limited backing of Mick Taylor (guitar), Colin Allen (drums), and Stephen Thompson (bass). Instantly, it is apparent that John Mayall hasn't lost his touch with the blues. "Vacation," the album's opener, reminds one exactly why this artist is so celebrated for his songwriting ability. The staggering Mick Taylor (here still in his teens) truly proves his worth as a blues guitarist, while Steve Thompson (also in his late teens) works superbly with one of the genre's most interesting drummers, Colin Allen. Blues from Laurel Canyon is as unerring as Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton, and equally as musically interesting. Not only is this one of the finest John Mayall albums, it is also a highlight in the blues genus. [The 2007 UMVD import edition included bonus tracks.]

First Time Alone There was nothing like that first time I was alone with you And the glow of your eyes told me love Sweet perfume in your hair There was nothing like the way Time went by as we lay by the fire And the burning logs flickered flames That drew us close without a sound First time I was alone with you Your bed was so soft with your sweet whispering Your fingers explore my burning skin Gentle as a butterfly No matter how many things we've known together There will never be such a peace Like that first time I was alone with you |

Как метко подмечено... Watching all the people Like the waves along the shore They hang around he whiskey And every open store I'm walking on sunset And I'll never reach the end I'm walking on sunset Everything is like a friend All the pretty women Never seen a better crop Music all around The flashing lights will never stop I'm walking on sunset And I'll never reach the end I'm walking on sunset Everything is like a friend Well standing at the corner Watching every kind of car Friendly people come and say They wanna see your star I'm walking on sunset And I'll never reach the end I'm walking on sunset Everything is like a friend The cops were in the cars But they never bothered me A new magic world I never felt so free Well I'm walking on sunset And I'll never reach the end Well I'm walking on sunset Everything is like a friend |
