Оба альбома группы Jericho Jones - Junkies Monkeys & Donkeys и Jericho я уже выкладывал. Первый, правда, довольно давно. Помнится, я сетовал на то, что добританская работа группы, еще под оригинальным названием צ'רצ'לים ("Черчелим", "The Churchills"), на СD никогда не выходила, а она, судя по древним записям на бобинах, того стоила. И, вдруг, израильская фирма Hed Arzi порадовала 2ХCD релизом The Churchills 1968 - 1971! Первый диск, отражает израильский период и содержит полный (и единственный) альбом группы - The Churchills + синглы и нереализованные вещи. На втором - уже знакомый нам Junkies Monkeys & Donkeys + синглы и unreleased. Глядя на трэклист, кажется довольно странным, что альбомы вставлены между бонусами, но прослушав диски, становится понятно, что именно такая, хронологическая, сортировка даёт возможность наблюдать группу в процессе развития, а её музыку, в процессе трансформации - от психоделии, до харда и прогрессива. Есть, однако и пара досадных ляпов. Во-первых, в трэклисте второго CD не хватает одной, имеющейся на диске вещи. Во-вторых, CD2 не определялся ни одной сddb. Решил глянуть на Gracenot'e и оказалось, что у них в трэклисте на одну вещь больше!  Ощем, пришлось писать ручками.Сама музыка произвела очень сильное впечатление. Вещи, одна в одну! А две последние на первом диске, Double Concerto и Chorale For Young Lovers, "модернизированная классика" (©troll), записанные с Израильским филармоническим оркестром, ИМХО, полный ПЦ! |

Огромным уважением пользуются американские, немецкие и голландские музыканты. Но такие страны как Израиль, хотя бы из-за своей небольшой территории, не могут похвастаться достойными исполнителями, их имена не гремели на просторах Европы. Или почти не гремели? Одной группе всего за 6 лет существования и два студийных альбома удалось не только стать, пожалуй, самым популярным коллективом Израиля, но занять свое место в истории. Имя этого коллектива JERICHO. Данный квинтет был очень популярен не только в Германии, но смог подписать контракт с английским лэйблом Red Bus. Первоначально ансамбль назывался CHURCHILLS и уже с самого начала карьеры язык группы был английский. Все музыканты знали друг друга еще со школьной скамьи и уже в 16 лет колесили с концертами по родному Израилю. В таком же несменяемом составе CHURCHILLS отправились в Англию на поиски лучшей жизни. И как бы это ни звучало фантастически, никому неизвестный коллектив сразу подписал контракт и начал запись дебютного диска на Red Bus. Руководитель студии Мэни Элиас очень тепло вспоминал о своих бывших подопечных: "Они были славными парнями. А успех в Израиле не остановил их, наоборот раззадорил. Как только они прибыли в Англию мы предложили им сменить название на JERICHO JONES, а потом просто на JERICHO." Их дебютный альбом не был шедевром, но музыка на нем была чертовски мила. От потрясающих фолковых пассажей на No school today, до динамичного харда в Man in the crowd. Ритм енд блюз в There is always a train совмещался с почти прогрессивом в Time is now. Но истинным украшением стал заглавный трек - потрясающий блюз с гениальной вокальной патией. ... в 1973 году группа распалась. О дальнейшей судьбе музыкантов несколько слов от Мэни Элиаса: "Дени Шошан живет в Израиле и гастролирует с местной командой, но он не так популярен как Майк Габриелов, который национальная звезда. Об Эми Трибахе я знаю только, что женился и живет в Израиле…" Но самое главное мы уже услышали - JERICHO JONES (JERICHO) больше нет. А значит, нет и заводного почти рокнрольного прогрессива от "славных" парней из Израиля. |

Genuine Middle Eastern psych. The band only made one album, but what an album and not only that this version has 6 bonus tracks! They then evolved into Jericho who feature on disc 2 of this magnificent set when their music showed a greater maturity in both songwriting and playing, featuring some excellent heavy bluesy/acid music. Still the band, led by guitarists Hayim Romano and Michael Gabrielov, did rock and even boasted an ex-Tornado (of “Telstar” fame) Rob Huxley, in their ranks, who wrote or co-wrote most of their output presented on this compilation in its entirety. A live cover of “She’s A Woman” aside, the ensemble, granted the title of the Israeli Beatles, didn’t aspire to the beat glory though, having opted rather for a variety of styles from the “Sunshine Man” exquisite psychedelia and THE PLATTERS-like romanticism of “Talk To Me” to the Stax-shaped “Coming Home”. Eclectic and confusing indeed, if one takes it too seriously, which would be a mistake, as “Straight People”, a stab at THE DOORS, suggests. Still, seriousness has to be involved here, with impressive rendition of Bach’s “Double Concerto” and “Chorale For The Young Lovers” recorded with The Israeli Philarmonic Orchestra at the same time when DEEP PURPLE did the similar thing. The two bands, incidentally, toured together – when THE CHURCHILL’S evolved into JERICHO JONES, whose highly sought-after album is included in this package as well. The progress towards heaviness started already on their 1969’s debut album, “The Churchill’s”, with sharp “Comics”, but there's also been a strong folk influence in Middle Eastern-colored "Debka" and "Subsequent Finale", to not accuse them of blindly following the trends, especially after entering the '70s with a not too inventive version of ZEPPELIN's "Living Loving". This - and said eclecticism - aside, the band were great, their songs easily on par with those that made it to the top, while THE CHURCHILL's didn't. Review: Listening to this 1968 debut by this Israeli psychedelic rock act, you could be forgiven for thinking The Churchills were a product of 60's Swinging London rather than their hometown of Tel Aviv. Opening with the infectiously upbeat "Open Up Your Eyes" it's obvious from the word go that the soulful rhythm and blues sounds of The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Cream were the major points of reference for The Churchills' brand of psychedelic rock. What makes this lesser known act competent enough to deserve comparison with these 60's rock legends is the sheer self-assured confidence of the delivery of this set of superb and very mature compositions. This combined with the album's deeply rich sound quality and stunning production by 1960's standards makes it very hard to see why, other than lack of promotion, the album did not achieve worldwide success. In addition to the quality of this album what makes it stand out amongst the pack of its more famous contemporaries is the heavenly blend of traditional Israeli styles with psychedelic rock on tracks such as "Subsequent Final" and "Debka". It is impossible to select a standout track from this album as all the material is very strong. After this album the band ditched their acid rock sound and ploughed a more trad rock furrow. The CD reissue adds a bonus selection of some of this material including their covers of Led Zeppelin's "Living Loving Maid" and The Beatles' "She's A Woman" and their own very Beatle-esque "Sunshine Man". All competent but pretty disposable in comparison to the original album material. This excellent underground classic makes for an essential purchase for fans of mainstream late 60's psych albums such as "Mr Fantasy" and "Disraeli Gears" |
