The first word to ever come to your mind while listening to this first SYL live DVD is INTENSITY. Devin Townsend, mastermind behind SYL is known for is already known for his genius. Bringing together fans from Progressive to Death Metal with his projects ("Terria", "Accelerated Evolution", "Physicist", etc.) this time around we are granted with an incredible live DVD that will please the fans of a more aggressive Townsend. It is suggested to listen to the small interview before the concert, as Devin explains clearly the idea behind SYL, the need he was having of creating a band that would transpire only pure aggression and heaviness. After releasing a new album last year, this new DVD features the show that was given at Vancouver – Canada The Commodore venue.Right away with the first second of "Dire", the heavy and loud intro of the new SYL album, you know what you will be treated with. Gene Hoglan on drums is a monster. Not only with his playing, but physically too. This man is HUGE! His drums seem to suffer each second of Hoglan’s playing. Devin is quite incredible too, delivering a high energetic physical performance; interacting, not always politely, with the crowd, which seems to be delighted by Townsend’s behaviour on stage. As a musician, none can deny his abilities. His capacity to go back and forth from clean to harsh shooting vocals is unbelievable, especially live, with no possibilities to redo takes like in studio.Although there is not too much to complain about SYL’s first DVD, one main issue is the bass sound. Even though Byron Stroud is clearly giving himself out on stage, we barely get to hear him properly. As for Jed Simon, on guitar, although he can be as energetic as Devin, his tight playing can really compare to Devin’s intensity and charisma on stage. The special features lack a bit in content. You will get a small interview, although interesting, from the band, and also two videos, which are rather simplistic. Nothing special here. All and all, any fans of SYL most get this DVD at any cost! This is truly the most hostile and violent live Metal DVD ever to be released. And who is to thank for this incredible tour de force? Mister Devin Townsend and no one else! - The Metal Observer
