Review
Released in August 1973 'Innervisions' was to spend over 80 weeks on the chart becoming one of Stevie's best sellers at that time.
Its themes are very, very simple. Life is tough but it's also beautiful. Things can seem lost and yet be redeemed with a bit of love and friendship from other humans. There are also themes of inner strength and a sense of striving to be better than other people credit you for.

'Too High' opens the album and it's slick. A groove-laden funk fest with some cool time changes and almost horizontally laid back vocal delivery. (maybe coz the theme is centred around dope??!)
This track flows into 'Visions'. A cool track that's a nice polar opposite to the opener. From here we get locked into a 7-minute 'Living for The City'. If you don't know this track you will as soon as you play it. It's one of Wonder's best-known tracks and on 'Innervisions' it comes with the full attack on the new guy in town. The theme is of the poison of the big city. Stevie recollects with such descriptiveness of the downfall of a guy with hopes and dreams. Musically it's solid and powerfully delivered.
'Golden Lady' ushers in a nice sense of balance after the bombast of the previous track. It's again slick and polished. Maybe it's one of the weaker tracks here but it's still a pleasure to listen to.
'Higher Ground' follows and it's perfect. I can't think of a better slice of funk. This track is truly timeless. It's been covered many times (not least by the Chilli Peppers who frankly murdered it) but never bettered. It's genius. Nuff said.
'Jesus Children Of America' sounds as though its going to be a corny track but it's quite the opposite. Almost gospel-like in its funk drenched power it is simply wonderful. Again everything sounds tight with some true 'in-the-pocket' grooves.
The pace is taken down nicely with 'All In Love Is Fair'. A beautiful track with some heart-breakingly-immense vocals. Not only could this guy play he could sing like an angel when required.
'Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing' follows. Again, another easily recognised Stevie classic. It's offset with some bonkers Latin percussion and is drenched in wonderful vocal harmonies. An incredibly uplifting track. It will make you feel better if you're day is a bad one!
Finally this monumental album closes with my favourite track of Stevie's. 'He's Misstra-Know-It-All' is a true work of genius. A lovely, mellow introduction leads into some groove-laden sections before seeing us home with a wonderfully drawn out fadeout. This track makes me smile, it makes me feel good and that's the timeless beauty of this track and indeed the whole album.
