Antonio Coma (1560 - 1629) Sacrae Cantiones 36 Motets for one, two, three, four voices and instruments Recorded at Chiesa del SS, Rosary, Cento in October 1998 Claudio Cavina - countertenor Elisabetta Tiso - soprano Lia Scrafini - soprano Emanuele Bianchi -countertenor Gianluca Ferrarini - tenor Paolo Fanciullacci - tenor Vincenzo Di Donato - tenor Sergio Foresti - bass Andrea Favari - bass Alberto Bianchi - bass Francesco Tasini - organ Leonardo Colonna - violone Alberto Guerra - curtal Francesco Tasini - conductor The name of Antonio Coma (1560-1629) can be added to many other composers who have made their recording debut recently on a full CD (here, two CDs). Born at Cento, near Ferrara, he worked at non-musical occupations until, at the age of 29, he was appointed maestro di cappella at the church of San Biagio. He remained there until his death 40 years later. His last published music was the Sacrae Cantiones of 1614, which is recorded here in its entirety. Earlier he had published three other books of sacred music, including an Office of the Blessed Virgin, some Masses, and the psalms for Vespers. Apart from a single solo work and two instrumental pieces, the other 33 concertos in this book are set for two, three or four voices with organ. All are very brief except a Litany of the Blessed Virgin for three voices and a Stabat Mater for four voices (a piece placed at the end of the book). Nothing is known about Coma's musical training, yet he has skillfully grasped the common practice of sacred musical composition of his time. The influence of Viadana is evident. This disc provides further evidence that sacred music in Italy at the end of the Renaissance was of an extraordinarily high level of quality even in smaller churches employing musicians who are long forgotten. The eight singers who share the varied vocal settings on this program understand the qualities of delicacy and gracefulness that were proper at the time. The only feature that prevents a higher recommendation is the omission from the booklet of the sung texts. The incipits indicate that they are familiar liturgical texts. Disc 1 01.
