A few of the early MCA Elton's were sourced from the MCA copy tapes, but most came from Digital clones of the DJM digital remasterings. The "Your Songs" compilation I did on Elton came from the existing MCA copy tapes, transferred "flat"...." Try and find the old DJM CD of this album; it's the best there will be. I actually had Kevin Gray unearth a copy for me in England when he went in the late 1980's. Any DJM Elton John CD should be on our wish list. They were the best.

The UK and the WG DJM CDs are different masterings, and they have different mixes of Sixty Years On. The WG DJM CD sounds very similar to the DCC for the two common songs.

For what it's worth, the relevant tracks on the West German S/T sound almost exactly like Steve's "Greatest Hits" mastering, suggesting that they transferred the original master tape flat and inserted the remix of "Sixty Years On" in there.

The DJM CD, which, my God, I wish I still had, was BEAUTIFUL. Very natural, not-too-bright sound. Listen to the EQ on the DCC EJ Gr. Hits for "Your Song" and "Border Song" and that's very similar to how it sounded.

I compared the WG DJM "S/T" & "Don't Shoot Me" and the Polydor "Caribou"...to Steve's DCC "Greatest Hits". They sound near identical to me. There is a slight difference, but they have the same amount of hiss, the same pops clicks and dropouts, and the same tonality. Conclusion? The WG DJM's probably use the master tapes, and possibly the Polydors too. I was told by a few people that some of the Polydors are clones of the DJM's. But I've also read that there may be more than one printing of the Polydors that use different masters. I'm a little foggy on this, but my findings are that the DJM and Polydors stand up to Steve's mastering when you compare them side by side. The MFSL's are near identical too but they're just a hair brighter.

The WG DJM of the self-titled has an alternate mix of "Sixty Years On". I would imagine that this is an original master, and that the tape with the final mix is a copy tape with the new mix spliced in. It's just a guess though. Maybe Steve knows. He handled those tapes.
