A Tree Full of Secrets
the definitive Pink Floyd rarities compilation

Introduction

On 18 CDs (yes, eighteen!) you'll find all the A and B sides of all the Pink Floyd singles, all the promo, edited, obscured, or remixed versions, and all the soundtracks bits of your favorite Pink Floyd and solo tracks.
Basically, this collection includes (nearly) all songs officially released, but not on regular album (compilations, singles, promos, soundtracks...), as well as rare versions from acetates and studio outtakes. We didn't consider live tracks (concerts, radio or TV appearances), unless they're part of a single or a promo single. We also left out of this scope the Syd Barrett solo rarities, because it mainly consists in slightly different mixes of regular versions (we'd like to let a more hardcore fan than we are, doing the job). Some other things are not included, mainly because they could be treed separately, as a whole entity: "Live At Pompeii" and "The Wall" soundtracks, mono editions of albums ("The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn", "A Saucerful Of Secrets"), quadraphonic editions of albums ("Atom Heart Mother", "The Dark Side Of The Moon", "Wish You Were Here")...
There are in fact 17 audio CDs and one data CD. This latter CD contains all the artworks and booklets (with all you ever dreamt to know about each track of each CD!), and some bonus files (that we hope you'll enjoy) while keeping the secret about their contents.
We tried to make the most definitive Pink Floyd rarities compilation, in both completeness and sound quality. For each track, we tried to find the best sounding version available. As a result, we're proud to say that a lot of tracks sound better than any other version available elsewhere.


Rules

What we mean with the word "rarity":

1) Song officially released, but not on regular albums (compilations, singles, soundtracks...) [1]
2) Alternate mix (acetate...)
3) Outtake from unreleased studio session
4) Demo

[1] with an exception for the stuff being a part of a whole "entity"
(most of them are available separately, as other projects).
For instance, the following stuff is not included:
- "Live At Pompeii" soundtrack
- "The Wall" soundtrack
- mono "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn", "A Saucerful Of Secrets"
- quadraphonic "Atom Heart Mother", "Dark Side Of The Moon", "Wish You Were Here"
- "Delicate Sound Of Thunder" video
- "P*U*L*S*E" video

"Chronological" rules for tracklist:

1) tracks are sorted by recording date, not release date [2]
2) different versions of the same track with same recording date are sorted by release date [3]
3) singles from the same album are listed in the same order than on the album [4]
[2] with an exception for the demos, placed before the actual release, to save "continuity" and to hear how the song evolved from the demo to the released version.
[3] if the release date is the same or unknown, the versions are sorted from the most "usual" to the most "unusual": single version -> extended version -> promo version
[4] unless the recording dates are known with precision for each track (in this case, see rule nr.1)

Contents

There are in fact 17 audio CDs and 1 data CD. This latter CD contains all the artworks and booklets, and some bonus files.
Now, how are all these tracks organized into 17 audio CDs?
The first 8 CDs contain the Pink Floyd rarities (from 1965 to 1994).
The next 6 CDs contain the soundtracks (from Pink Floyd and members).
The last 3 CDs contain the solo members rarities.
The 17 CDs are split into 9 volumes (each volume is a 2 CD set, except volume 9, which is a single CD). So, there are 9 different artworks, and the whole Rarities compilation will take the place of 9 jewel boxes in your CD collection.

CD5

1 - Merry Xmas Song (uncredited) 02:05

Impromptu song, probably sung by Nick Mason, with John Peel and Alan Stiles (Floyd roadie to whom the song "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" on "Atom Heart Mother" album is dedicated). Some say it was recorded during the Zabriskie Point sessions in Rome, December 1969. Other think it's from 1974 or 1975. One thing is almost certain though: it must have been recorded in December... ;-)

2 - Shine on you Crazy Diamond (Gilmour, Waters, Wright) - part 1 03:52

This version fades in during Part 3 (last guitar solo before vocals), continues with the first verse of Part 4 ("Remember when you were young ... you legend, you martyr, and shine"), then jumps to Part 7 (third verse: "Nobody knows where you are ... for truth and delusion, and shine"), and fades out during the end of Part 8.

4 - Shine on you Crazy Diamond (Gilmour, Waters, Wright) - 1981 edit 10:35

Part 3 (last guitar solo before vocals) is skipped, Part 4 and Part 7 are linked (so that the three verses are continuous), and there's a fade out after the last verse (just before Part 8).

On the promo sampler, this version is called "radio edit", but it's in fact a short version of the song (there is no "edit"): it fades in at the beginning of Part 4 ("Remember when you were young ...") and fades out at the end of Part 5 (sax solo).

This version is also called "radio edit" on the US promo sampler, although it's slightly different from the "radio edit" on the UK promo sampler. Again, there's no "edit" and it's in fact a short version: it fades in during the end of Part 3 (last guitar solo before vocals) and fades out early during Part 5 (sax solo).

7 - Shine on you Crazy Diamond (Gilmour, Waters, Wright) - "storm" mix 27:48

Parts 1 to 9 linked together, remixed with storm noises in the background. It is said that this track was remixed by or for the BBC, but it is probably a fake. However, it has acquired a certain fame in the trading circle of Pink Floyd fans. We included it here, in order to let you make your own opinion.

8 - Shine on you Crazy Diamond (Gilmour, Waters, Wright) - "to the galaxy" 01:22

During one of the scenes in the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" radio series (an adaptation of Douglas Adams' novel), the opening of "Shine on you Crazy Diamond" can be heard in the background and one of the characters (Arthur) says "Ford, do you realize that robot can hum like Pink Floyd ?".

9 - Have A Cigar (Waters) - short version 04:13

Note that the various European releases of this single have shorter or longer versions: the French promo juke-box single is 04:50 long (it's nearly the complete version), the Belgian single is 04:24 long and the Italian single is 04:13 long. All these European versions fade out during the final guitar solo.

10 - Have A Cigar (Waters) - stereo edit 03:36

On the US 8-tracks cartridge release of the "Animals" album, both parts of "Pigs on the Wing" were linked by a guitar solo played by Snowy White. This enhanced track was only released on CD in 1995, on Snowy White's compilation "Gold Top".

3 - Pigs (Three Different Ones) (Waters) - short version 04:05

Roger says two bits of sentence at the very end and the very beginning of "The Wall". Some understand: "Isn't this where … we came in ?", others understand: "Somebody spoke … we came in".

5 - Another Brick In The Wall part 2 (Waters) - single version 03:10

This version has four extra bars at the beginning (rhythm guitar intro that doesn't appear on the album because of the abrupt transition between "The Happiest Days of our Lives" and "Another Brick in the Wall part 2") and fades out during the guitar solo.

6 - Another Brick In The Wall part 2 (Waters) - 1981 single version 03:47

There's a backwards message at the start of "Empty Spaces": "Congratulations, you have just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer at the Funny Farm, care of Old Pink, Chalfont". Then David shouts "Roger, Carolyne on the phone".

8 - Young Lust (Waters, Gilmour) - single version 03:56

This version has some unreleased intro bars (on the album the track starts with the lyrics) and doesn't fade out with the phone call. Note that there's a special US promo mix (on "Off The Wall" radio promo EP) that doesn't have the intro bars, but has the same ending.

9 - One of my Turns (Waters) - single version 03:39

No croud noise during intro and outro. Only one guitar theme before the first "Run, run, run, run…" instead of two, but it is repeated twice at the end (after the scream) instead of once. The "hunt" part is edited.

13 - Run Like Hell (Gilmour, Waters) - promo mix 04:42

No crowd noise during intro and outro. Intro theme (before the guitar theme) is twice as long as on the album. Guitar theme is repeated twice after the final scream, instead of once.

This song is the only soundtrack extract from "The Wall" movie that was eventually officially released. In the film, it was split into two parts (with more choir intro and outro). The orchestra is mixed louder on this version, which also has more drum rolls.

17 - Bring the Boys Back Home (Waters) - single version 01:40

This song was re-recorded for the film, without Roger's voice (there's only the choir). On this single version, the orchestral bridge is longer than on the album version (also note that the flute theme is not in the film version) and with three reprises of "Bring the boys back home", when there's only one on the album.

19 - Not Now John (Waters) - obscured version 04:23

Since the original version has lyrics that say "F*** all that", David Gilmour came back in the studio to make a radio-friendly version ("Stuff all that") for the single release. Note that they just recorded "Stuff all that" loud enough to drown the original, which is still there. The intro is slightly different from the album version (no laugh), and this version fades out before the lyrics "Where's the fucking bar John?".

20 - Not Now John (Waters) - promo edit 03:46

This version is not obscured (it has the F*** word). It begins directly with the vocals (no intro), and the lines "Hold on John, I think there's something good on … it could be reusable shows" were skipped.
