ENO / WOBBLE - Spinner (1995)

user posted image

Trying to pigeonhole this project is impossible. Spinner is a very strange record for Brian Eno. He'd been thinking about artists who don't censor their own work: Picasso, Miles Davis, Prince. Says Eno: "They just put it out (and) say, let the market decide; let the world decide. I thought this time I would do that and see what happens".
Scene 1. Eno created the original music for late British film-maker Derek Jarman's "Glitterbug."
Scene 2. Eno gave the 2-track tapes to world music fusionist Jah Wobble.
Scene 3. Wobble just worked on top of them, or didn't.
This Spinner thing is undeniably challenging. Given that Eno first applied the word "ambient" to music, this might be considered by some to be an "ambient" record of sorts. What's exciting is that it's full of fun stuff like dense washes of dub-style bass and spacy wailing colliding with sound textiles being spit out by an electronic loom (hear "Unusual Balance"). Now and again you get sampled radio bits and something maybe almost danceable (hear "Steam"). It's also serene and delicate like "Garden Recalled" (a track that Wobble left as it was). For the adventurous ones among you. [From consciouschoice.com]
