Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab "Original Master Recording" gold CD. At the time of Guns N' Roses debut album Appetite For Destruction, the United States was knee deep in the glam rock scene. With one album Axl Rose and company redefined what it meant to be a bad ass band. In a time where it was cliche to have "nothing but a good time", Guns N' Roses paraded drugs, cheap sex, and violence to an extent that hadn't been seen since the high point of AC/DC in the early 1980's. Easily the best, and most definitive album that Guns N' Roses ever recorded, Appetite For Destruction ushered in the hard rock revolution in the late 80's and early 90's. The songs range from the decay of the inner city in "Welcome To the Jungle", to the drug and alcohol trips in "Nightrain", and "Mr. Browstone". In the middle of an album that seems to glorify the crumbling city life, "Paradise City" is a track about wanting to get out. Guns N' Roses also chose to show their sensitivity in tracks like "Sweet Child O' Mine", "Think About You", and "Rocket Queen". The guitars lay the background with bluesy metallic riffs. Izzy Stradlin and Slash achieve music with depth and feeling that was rare in 1980's commercial music. Steven Adler and Duff McKagan prove themselves as competent background men, but in the end take a back seat to the guitars and Axl's screeches. The music is powerful and gritty. Unfortunately, this would be the last time that the band stuck to the simple sex, drugs, and rock n' roll formula. In the end, that is what the band was best at, and with Axl itching to show his artistic side, the band was about to take a drastic turn. The dirty stuff is what these boys were good at, which is why this album stands above anything else in the Guns N' Roses catalog. Essential for anyone collecting albums that defined rock n' roll history, Appetite For Destruction represents the pinnacle of Guns N' Roses creativity, not to mention a high point in 1980's hard rock. |
