Founded by acid jazz icon and poster boy for Japan's slow jazz scene Gonzales Suzuki, Soul Bossa Trio boasts a sophisticated, smooth sound with nods to bossa nova, 70s fusion, and club and acid jazz. Originally a member of the Tokyo Panorama Mambo Boys, Suzuki formed Soul Bossa Trio in 1993, and the unit released its debut album A Taste of Soul Bossa in 1994. Later the same year, they released their second long-player, Dancing in the Street. Both albums did well among the club set as well as with hardcore jazz fans, and after a remix album, live album, and a single, the band released the funkier, fusion inspired In Native in August 1997. Amid numerous remixes, singles, and side projects, along with a fluid lineup (Suzuki is the only constant), the unit released four more critically acclaimed albums, with the most recent being 2004's Songs and Melodies - a beautiful, reflective set covering an eclectic range of songs from artists including Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Elvis Costello, Monday Michiru, and others, and featuring vocals by Suzuki proteges Ann Sally and Noon, among others. Soul Bossa Trio's fresh yet loyal take on jazz has found considerable acceptance overseas as well as in Japan, and both on the dance floor and the festival scene. In addition to Soul Bossa Trio, Suzuki has numerous production credits to his name, including Anne Sally, Noon, and Eri Kamiyama. Over the years he has produced a slew of artists, including Courtney Pine, Omar Hakim, Anthony Jackson, Katsumi Watanabe, and others. He has collaborated with the likes of Jazzanova and Incognito, and has been remixed by artists including Fantastic Plastic Machine and Nobukazu Takemura. In addition, Suzuki is also active as a radio personality, hosting jazz-related programs at several stations. by Bill Haw - nippop Tracklisting: 01.Ain't No Sunshine (4:14) 02.Poochie (3:34) 03.Tin Tin Deo (4:03) 04.Call Me, Mr. Vibes (3:41) 05.Come An' Get It (2:53) 06.Here (5:38) 07.A Holiday In South Zone (Saudade Do Rio) (3:24) 08.A Child And Sea (5:36) 09.Snooky Little Pigs (4:36) 10.Thank You (4:23) 11.Cha Chita (2:50) |
