Bark Psychosis - Codename: Dustsucker (2004)
user posted image

In the ten years since writer Simon Reynolds coined the term "post-rock" in an attempt to describe the sound of Bark Psychosis' Hex, many bands have followed the electro-acoustic suit to varying degress of success. So, what's to be expected from the group that created the need for yet another genre category? Another genre smashing release? A follow-up that could never create a stir quite like the first? Codename: Dustsucker hinges somewhere in the middle.
A decade later, Graham Sutton and his loose collective of musicians fit, if anywhere, in the fringes of the post-rock category. Not easy to describe, but easily recognizable. As the market has flooded in the wake, their sound has been updated, but is not as unique as Hex was when released.
Produced over the past five years in Sutton's DustSucker Studio, this recording is a labor of love and it shows in the lush, multi-layered soundscapes. From the slow, spacey guitar and breathy vocals over reverberating drums and synthesizers of opener From What Is Said To When Its Read, to the ominous Miss Abuse with it's pulsating beat and sparse bass line, to the feedback heavy, metallic shreds of Dr. Innocuous / Ketamoid and abrupt change of course to the soft piano line and cymbal percussion of Burning The City, a huge amount of sonic terrain is covered in what seems to be a shorter time then it actually is.
While not necessarily groundbreaking, a breath of fresh air in a crowd that sometimes suffocates the listener. Perhaps most impressive is the fact that the tracks average around six minutes each, yet grip you, morph around themselves and rarely drag.
