Who could have thought that it was to grow into such a rich and impressive fullness, with which the band presents themselves as one of the most appealing and leading acts of (modern) metal? Melodic death, technical thrash, elements from eighties metal and progressive influences, packed in Sudden changes of pace and intriguing structures, are the elements which, yet again, have been interlaced impressively into a colourful and fascinating completeness. At 'Holographic Universe' the quintet not only retain the sound we have known from then from their previous albums 'Symmetric In Design' (2005) and 'Pitch Black Progress' (2006), but has also widened it. There has been paid a little more attention to melody and the accent has been put a little more on the clean vocals as well. This approach results in more openness, without losing any of their speed, aggression and power. Do not make the mistake to think that winning on accessibility is equal to writing bagatelle, for the impeccable skill with which the songs are composed is marvellous. Does gaining on clean vocals than mean that the vocal acrobatics by Christian Älvestam have decreased? None of that! Also this time around there is that typical diversity between bright vocals and filthy death grunts; there has only been decided to use the clean vocals a bit more. Next to it 'Holographic Universe' knows even more pronounced solos and a warm, organic and great production, once again done by guitarist Jonas Kjellgren. From openings track 'Morphogenesis', to 'Quantumleaper', 'The Missing Coordinates' and title track 'Holographic Universe' till 'Ghost Prototype II (Deus Ex Machina)' you will be confronted with one after another climax. The combination of brutality and melody and the ingenuity with which that is done make 'Holographic Universe' to a more or less flawless album. The previous albums by Scar Symmetry were rated high by colleague Koen and with this album even better, I see no other option than to rate 'Holographic Universe' even higher. Well, why not; you rarely come across an album so enchanting... |
