Jazz gets a new face whenever pioners like bassist and composer August
Engkilde send out their work. After attending NYC's New School Of Contemporary Music and learning about Cuban Music in Havanna, August Engkilde won't stop for any boarders within sound and music creation anymore. His compositions were recorded live by the "Band Of Inner Urge", then been cut into small pieces on a computer, from where new beats and songs have been created. On top of it all: strange samples recorded in a New Delhi cinema. Out comes this bizarre and atmospheric album, a dramatic extravaganza full of tensions!

Whilst travelling in India, August Engkilde responded to the Bollywood cultural phenomenon by recording an example (in this case a gangster movie) and on his return, juxtaposing the live recording under and over a score recorded by himself, and his seven-piece jazz collective Band of Inner Urge. The direction and distinction between the two is immediately apparent, the hollow resonance of a re-recording teased, looped, elongated and inter-twined within jazz structures, semi-live, semi-programmed, but holding a theme and developing new textures through the suspense and sense of anticipation created by the original score. Engkilde manages to not only parody scenes (the chic Dick Barton jazz of "Gangsters Shoot Jazz" complete with gunshots), but metamorphosise harsh Indian sounds into his own complex punctuation of fusion, beats and technology crossing many musical genres. An intriguing listen from Vienna's cut price conceptualists.
