Hi,

I am sorry to say, but this is not a true lossless file. Perhaps it came from a pirated CD. It is still good music and doesn't kill your ears to listen to, but it is in everybody's interest that files that were originally mp3s are not circulated as lossless music. After all, why bother wasting harddrive space and download time for lossless formats if the technical quality is the same as mp3?

It has been sourced from mp3 which is shown quite clearly in the screenshot below. MP3 compression reduces the signals between 16-20kHz and the red top of the spectrum should look natural and irregular and be placed at the lowest slightly above 20kHz. Instead it has been cut off neatly at precisely 16kHz and left some blocky signals in the band above, chunky blocks that are another clear sign of compression.

Hi,

All I want to do is to alert you to the fact that:

a) if you got these APEs from someone else, they fooled you by pretending that all of them are geniune; or,
B) if you bought them yourself, you have been sold pirated CDs.

You don't have to take my word for it, just ask around in any audiophile forum on the internet where sound experts/technicians are present (such as hydrogenaudio.org), and they will tell you that the screenshot above depicts music having been compressed to mp3. Once compressed to mp3, what is lost is lost forever, and no matter if the file is recoded to a lossless format, it will still essentially be an mp3 file.

The other CDs you have uploaded here are alright and genuine, but the ones I commented on today with screenshots are sourced from mp3-compressed files.

All the best!

Of course it is not wise to draw hasty conclusions, and precisely for that reason, I did do some extensive testing with other Sony/CBS releases of the same recordings to see if they differed. And they all did! I made similar tests with the Goldbergs and Beethoven's concertos and the Hindemith sonatas for brass.

For instance, take the French Suites (Bach). Currently at Demonoid there is a seed of the 1970s CBS release. It's the same recording that Sony has released in the box we are discussing here.

The CBS recording has a perfectly naturally looking top level of the spectrum at just above 20kHz, as one could expect from CDDA.

This same recording Sony released later, after buying CBS Masterworks, in their white-cover Glenn Gould Edition. Only now they had remastered it with 20kBit technique further improving the technical quality.

The one shared here has a neat haircut at 16kHz though and occasional bricks above.

What could explain that difference?

PS. Pirated CDs are bought and sold in the Amazon market place as well, you know.
