QUOTE
It is the year 1990. Heavy Metal is more or less accepted, on German television there are Metal-TV.shows, VICTORY release their "Temples Of Gold" and there are TV-ads for it.
Now is the year 2001, Heavy Metal is not really sure, if it is accepted or outlawed, in German TV you can be glad, if you can see an electric guitar from afar (and I don't even talk about hearing it!) and VICTORY are no more.
Anyway, "Temples Of Gold" is mostly regarded as their second-best album after "Culture Killed The Native" and I am inclined to agree. Melodic Metal had always been the chosen weapon of the Hanover-based band and one of its trademarks had been "El Toro Loco", singer Fernando Garcia, whose characteristic voice has had quite some originality to it, even today.
And even though this style is not really the most successful, VICTORY still can stand up to the test, this album has not lost its freshness and quality to this day. Songs like the catchy "Rock'n'Roll Kids Forever", the hymnic "Backseat Rider" or the fast "Standing Like A Rock" all convince by thought-through and accessible (yet never simple) song-writing, well arranged vocals and a balanced mixture of heavy guitars and good melodies. Even though they cannot hold the standard completely, no wonder with 15 tracks.
That the production still is up to par even today, eleven years later is thanks to Albert Boekholt, who has been responsible for more than just one great production around the change of the decade, what's happened to him, haven't heard of him in a long time...
