Crawford softly croons through the lead track "I'm Glad There Is You," accompanied by only a piano. She follows suit on songs like "Can We Bring It Back" and "Year After Year." Recent Crawford best-ofs omit "Cigarette in the Rain," and this one doesn't have "Give Me the Night" or "Your Precious Love," but makes up for the omissions with sterling renditions of "Rainy Night in Georgia" and "I Stand Accused" - a wash. At that point in her career, Crawford enjoyed little or no interest from urban contemporary radio. But then, Naked and True is hardly album that goes out of its way to appeal to urban contemporary tastes of the 1990s. Much of the time, the CD sounds like it could have been recorded in the late 1970s or early 1980s instead of the mid-1990s. Dominated by cover songs, Naked and True finds the singer putting her recognizable stamp on R&B hits ranging from the Spinners' "I'll Be Around," Change's "The Glow of Love" and George Benson's "Give Me The Night" to Patrice Rushen's "Forget Me Nots" and Simply Red's "Holding Back the Years." Especially noteworthy is her cover of Prince's "Purple Rain," which she changes from a rock/soul ballad to a jazzier, more quiet stormish number. Naked and True often sounds dated, but dated in a good sense – if you consider the late 1970s and early 1980s a great period for R&B, you'll find a lot to like about this enjoyable, if less than essential, CD.

Her voice can be sweet and airy, as on the dramatic, orchestrally punched opening track, but she digs deeper on more emotional statements like "Free the Child." "Permanent" is a funky power ballad in the classic R&B tradition, while "Sweetest Thing" rides along a soaring string section and percussive near-disco groove. "When the Evening Comes" and "All I Do" do the disco thing very impressively, but with a class reminiscent of Lisa Stansfield. "Fire and Rain" isn't the James Taylor song, but actually has a hook that would seduce even the most cynical teenybopper. Crawford shows her range on power ballads like "Tell It to Your Heart" and an acoustic, jazzy cover of "Alfie." Back again, on tour with the Crusaders pianist Joe Sample, she has been digging deeper into the jazz tradition. The urbane, uptown blues ballads of the late, great Charles Brown provide a role model this time, as her old friend Tommy LiPuma directs proceedings from the studio console. Given Crawford’s sunny persona, she gets a surprising amount of mileage out of Every Day I Have the Blues and Respect Yourself, while the accompaniment is always direct and unfussy. ~ ~ ~ Georgia-born R&B/jazz singer Randy Crawford and keyboardist Joe Sample go back a long way. Sample played on The Crusaders' huge 1979 hit, Street Life, which featured an extraordinary vocal by Crawford – check out the excellent YouTube footage, complete with Sample's frilly shirt! Although Crawford's early run of subsequent solo hits (Rainy Night In Georgia, You Might Need Somebody, etc) wasn't sustained, and she's had a fairly low profile in recent years, the UK's Shola Ama enjoyed success with a more or less copycat version of You Might Need Somebody in 1997. In 2006, Crawford and Sample made their first joint album, Feeling Good, which he claims was the first time her voice had ever got the stripped-down setting it really deserved. No Regrets continues that approach with the same small ensemble on a selection of carefully chosen, lovingly crafted standards, plus a few less familiar numbers. There's great, unobtrusive backing by Steve Gadd (drums) and Christian McBride (bass), the occasional tasty touch of guitar and brass, and intuitive piano accompaniment by Sample. Crawford’s voice has deepened and mellowed over the years and she doesn't go in for the vocal gymnastics she once did, but her tremulous phrasing is as distinctive and appealing as ever. Sample's intro to Everyday I Have The Blues seems to teasingly half quote My Baby Just Cares For Me, by Nina Simone – one of Crawford's idols – and there's more blues on Today I Sing The Blues and Don't Put All Your Dreams In One Basket. The old Billie Holiday hit Me, Myself and I wanders into jazz, and there's a soulful, Staxy vibe on Leroy Mitchell's Starting All Over Again. With knife crime and anti-social behaviour grabbing headlines, the tough R&B take on Respect Yourself has an uncanny resonance. Crawford takes convincing ownership of Sarah McLachlan's 1997 hit Angel, although the same might not be said of the title track, which probably should have been left to Edith Piaf. Apart from that, and the fact that the world probably doesn't need another version of Chip Taylor's Angel Of The Morning, this won't disappoint old fans. ~ by Jon Lusk, 03 October 2008

Career
Crawford first polished her craft at club gigs from Cincinnati to Saint-Tropez, but made her name in mid 1970s in New York, where she sang with jazzmen George Benson and Cannonball Adderley. Along the way she has rubbed elbows with Bootsy Collins, Johnny Bristol, Quincy Jones, Al Jarreau and others.

She then led R&B veterans The Crusaders on the transatlantic big hit "Street Life" (1979). This song stayed atop the U.S. jazz chart for twenty weeks and has since become both a rare groove and disco classic, and appeared in commercials in the early 2000s. Her follow up solo efforts included "'One Day I'll Fly Away" (1980, Grand Prize for Tokyo International Music Festival and UK #1); "You Might Need Somebody" (1981); and "Rainy Night in Georgia" (1981); which all became soul standards. The album, "Secret Combination" (1981) stayed on the Billboard album chart for sixty weeks, after which her profile dipped, despite a return to the Top Ten with "Almaz" in 1986.

"Naked And True" (1995) brought Crawford back to her roots: it included Benson's "Give Me The Night", and confirmed her soul heritage by featuring Funkadelicists Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell and The Fred Wesley Horns. But she enjoyed her highest profile of the decade when rising starlet, Shola Ama, had a worldwide hit with her 1997 cover of "You Might Need Somebody".
