Review:
Robotobibok was established in July 1998, in Wroclaw, Poland. In its music, Robotobibok seeks to combine elements of contemporary music currents, notably to mix electronic-inspired trends with the energy of jazz improvisation. In Robotobibok’s instrumental dimension, the powerful, acoustic sound of the percussion, bass, trumpet and saxophone intertwines with the electric guitar and characteristic sound of the 70’s analogue electronic music. As a result, the sound of the band may bring about the ambience of electric jazz of the late sixties and early seventies, and in the synthesizer-based parts the atmosphere of electro-acoustic experiments characteristic of early electronic music. One major feature of Robotobibok’s music is the post-jazz character of the rhythm section. The drum and bass parts are ostensibly inspired by the dynamics of the contemporary electronic currents, however, they are only used as a starting point for more complex structures. The Robotobibok strive at further development of their own language of improvisation. In it, space is left for solo movements of particular instruments with none of them, however, free to overshadow the rest.
The band has recorded two CDs: „Jogging" (2000) and „Instytut Las" (2003). Both CDs were recorded in cooperation with Tomasz Gwincinski (the producer of Robotobibok’s albums), with whom Kuba Suchar – the leader of Robotobibok – recorded one of his projects entitled „Clever Nonsense And Other Outdoor Games" (2002). All CDs of Robotobibok and those of the band’s friend musicians (like mentioned above Tomasz Gwincinski and AGD), are released by their own, independent label – Vytvornia OM, Technology in service of meditation.
For more than three years the band has played in Poland and abroad (Knitting Factory – New York, 2002; Paradiso – Amsterdam 2004; AB – Brussel 2004), at such festivals as.: „JVC Warsaw Jazz Festival 2002", „XI Warsaw Sumer Jazz Days 2002", "Sergey Kuryokhin International Festival 2003" in Berlin, "Eurosonic Festival 2004" in Groningen. Robotobibok performed with: Nils Peter Molvaer & Khmer, Chicago Underground Duo/Trio, Tied & Tickled Trio, De Kift. In April 2002 the band toured the USA and in 2004 they performed in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Austria, Slovenia and Italy. Robotobibok is also releasing new album in 2004.

The most refreshing playing in Poland since the Yass explosion. What brings one down to ones knees in Robot’s music is the mental maturity of the musicians – a great rhythm section which makes excursions into dense jungle and its soloists (Maciek Baczyk from (the band) AGD, the saxophone player Adam Pindur). Dynamic fusion of jazz, rock, exquisite electro and drum’n’bass are a good recommendation for a band which sometimes does even better live. Wonderfully engineered and produced (with the help of Tomasz Gwinciński (Maestro Trytony, Loskot) the album shows that in the alternative market not everything has to sound poor and cary the aroma of the east German Jazz.

Just because you don't live in Chicago doesn't mean you can't groove with sax and samplers. Poland's post-jazz scene is going strong, sauntering through the territories cut by Poland's first wave Yass (formerly hard-core musicians who then defined Polish post-jazz) for a more refined downtempo hybrid of psychedelic post-rock and schooled jazz. Purveyors of this sweet and patient new sound fall into two camps: the jazzier and jocular, with bands like Robotobibok leading the former and splinter group AGD doing the latter. Robotobibok bridges Bitches Brew, Bill Laswell, breakbeat drumming and the whole of the Polish jazz tradition. Combining the motor of 'robot' with the Polish word "obibok" (loosely translated as droning or loafing) their name says all that the music conveys. Robotobibok's direction follows avantjazz legends Maestro Trytony, whose leader Tomasz Gwincinski produced their debut "Jogging," a landmark of this newly grooving downtempo scene.(Tamizdat)
