Review by HARP Magazine
ZZ Top’s fantastic run began with its third album, 1973’s Tres Hombres, and more specifically with the killer riff in "La Grange," the trio’s paean to a Texas whorehouse. Though it was a retread of John Lee Hooker’s "Boogie Chillen" (Hooker sued ZZ Top and won), "La Grange" became the de rigueur soundtrack for drinking canned beer, straining seeds out of pot and squirming in the backseat. Other monster riffs show up in "Precious and Grace" and the two-part opening suite of "Waitin’ for the Bus" and "Jesus Just Left Chicago"-originally a single track, the songs were separated in a fortuitous engineering mistake.

Fans have complained about the original CD transfers of both albums, which were created in the ’80s. Here they’ve been remastered but the difference is only marginally better. Speaking of funky sound, the three live tracks added to each disc sound like middling-quality bootlegs. While fans will need all the extras, it’s the ones on Fandango (including a slowed down "Tush") that show off prime, old-school ZZ Top energy.

ZZ Top,

La Grange.mp3 is favorite ringing tone in my mobile phone. Try it!
