QUOTE | Jean Guillou (1930) has been hailed as one of the outstanding musicians of our day. Distinguished as a leading interpreter of organ literature from the 18th century to the present, Jean Guillou is regnized as a composer of importance with published works ranging from symphonis and concerti for piano and organ to chamber music and works for solo organ. He has enriched the repertoire of the pipe organ through a series of extraordinary transcriptions of orchestral works by composers as diverse as Bach, Handel, Liszt, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov, Mussorgsky and Stravinsky. The range of his artistic imagination is attested to by his varied compositional output which includes scores for several experimental films, incidental music for the theater and for a number of pantomimes by Marcel Marceau. One of the last great exponents of the art of improvisation, Guillou also has won praise as a pianist, having premiered his own pano concerti and given the first performances in England and France of a forgotten masterpiece, the piano sonata of Julius Reubke. With the publication of Guillou's book L'Orgue, Souvenir et Avenir, he has emerged as a leading figure in the field of organ theory and design. His ideas on organ design have yielded remarkable fruit, and among the beautiful and revolutionary organs constructed according to his plans, several can be heard on recordings. Emerging from the great tradition of French organists-composers embodied by his teacher, Marcel Duprй, Guillou nevertheless has a completely distinctive musical personality. With his tremendous virtuosity ad highly personal approach to registrationand rhythm, Guillou remains a devoted exponent of the music of J.S. bach. In 1985, he gave seven performances of the complete Bach organworks. Le Figaro has stated, "His art is both seductive and awe-inspiring. It transcends tradition without ever being unfaithful to it". Jean Guillou has made over 30 recordings for Philips, CBS, Festivo and Dorian. He has won the Grand Prix du Disque Liszt of the Liszt Academy, Budapest and the "International Performer of the Year" Award of new york City Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, as well as a French Grand prix du Disque. Sinds 1963 he has been titulair organist of the organ of St. Eustache, Paris. |
