Heinrich Schutz (1585 - 1672)

Opus ultimum

Ensemble:
Concerto Palatino
Collegium Vocale Gent

Conductor:
Philippe Herreweghe

In the early 1660s, Schutz, relegated among the faded glories of the Dresden court, began to prepare for his own death. He embarked on a setting of all 176 verses of Psalm 119, a summing-up of the Old and New Testaments, without necessarily expecting the resulting work to be performed: it was to be his swansong or Schwanengesang. Ten years later, this Opus ultimum had evolved into 11 motets for double choir. The manuscripts were dispersed after his death and it was to be another three centuries before the work was reconstructed and then sung.
In 1900 during a clear out in the town church of Guben, now Gubin, Poland, six manuscript books from a set of 8-part motets for double choir by Schutz were found. These were works whose existence had until then been known only from old documents. A second windfall occurred in 1930, when the lost continuo part turned up in the antiquarian book trade and was bought by Stefan Zweig. The Guben parts disappeared during the war and did not resurface until the mid-1970s, when Dresden musicologist Wolfram Steude relocated them. Thus a second chance was offered to preserve this collection of works permanently for posterity by means of a scientific critical edition. Der Schwanengesang is in both artistic and biographical terms one of Heinrich Schutz's most remarkable works, written at 86 and concluding his life's work with a collection of motets for double choir, addressed to Eternity.
Philippe Herreweghe and his Collegium Vocale Gent have already made a couple of other great Schutz recordings. There's the heartrending Musikalische Exequien from 1987 and the awe-inspiring Geistliche Chormusik from 1994. But good as those recordings were, they aren't in the same league as this 2005 recording of Schutz's opus ultimum, his Schwanengesang, his final musical meditation on life, death, and life after death. As before but far more so, Herreweghe and the Collegium Vocale find the balance between austerity and expressivity - making every line, every phrase, every note count but making it count no more and no less than it needs to make its point. And yet, for all the severity and spirituality that pervades this music, Herreweghe and the Collegium Vocale bring out the deep beauty of its melodies and the sensuous colors of its harmonies. Capped with a stirring performance of Schutz's sublime Deutsches Magnificat, this warmly recorded and lovingly packaged Harmonia Mundi two-disc set should be heard by everyone who's interested in the music of the German High Baroque in general and in the music of Schutz, its greatest composer, in particular.

The fate of Heinrich Schutz's Schwanengesang (swan song), an exalted 17th-century setting of all 176 verses of Psalm 119, is one of musicology's great detective stories. It wasn't until the 1970s, after parts of the score had been found, lost, and found again, that Schutz's music was finally reassembled and its great beauty appreciated. In the 1660s, with the end of his life looming and his own music increasingly becoming an anachronism, Schutz reached back to an archaic style for his final opus: the double-choir motet technique derived from his teacher, Giovanni Gabrieli. It took ten years to complete and was probably never performed before modern times, but today the work speaks with the ageless message of one seeking solace in the face of mortality. Philippe Herreweghe and Collegium Vocale Gent's performance is exemplary, finding a serene balance between the music's lush beauty and its devotional solemnity, and the understated instruments of Concerto Palatino color the music in tones of dark amber. Add in the sonic warmth of Harmonia Mundi's recording and the elegance of their packaging, and this is one swan song to swoon over.
