Theodore Kuchar is one of the best conductors on the NAXOS label. His "Pictures of an Exhibition" is outstanding and this CD collection is equally good. Under Kuchar's skillful direction, the National Symphony Orchestra gives exciting and powerful performances of the 1812 Overture, Marche Slav, & the Romeo & Juliet, and wonderful re-enditions of the Capriccio Italien and Snow Maiden dance. I own many higher-price versions of the 1812 and Romeo & Juliet (e.g. Leonard Bernstein, Sian Edwards, Antal Dorati) and this NAXOS CD is equal to those higher priced versions.
If you enjoy NAXOS, the 1812 Overture, Marche Slav, Romeo & Juliet, and Capriccio Italen conducted by Adrian Leaper with the Royal Philharmonic is also equally good to this collection. You may want to also check out the Sian Edwards version on Classics for Pleasure label (w/ Francesca da Riminia and Tatiana's letter song). These are in the same price range and offer outstanding performances as well.
This CD is a real bargain, with excellent performances, great sound quality, and a generous offering of famous pieces for such an inexpensive price. The Penguin Classical CD guide rates this CD as "outstanding"; they would not rate this CD as "outstanding" if it does not contain a high quality performance and sound. I fully agree with their assessment.
