Well, Hollenthon may have been away for seven years, but it seems as if they take on with this "Opus Magnum" where its predecessor ("With Vilest Of Worms To Dwell") stopped: hell, it seems even as if eight songs on one album is their standard. So once more the fans can count on an epic dark metal album, with use of horns and additional vocals (by Elena Schirenc for the female voices and by the use of samples in the choirs), taking it a bit from different genres but still creating a kind of music that can only be described as Hollenthon.

I think it is funny to speak of black/ death metal in this matter, of which I have read some descriptions of this band: dark orchestral metal fits the description way better, describing Hollenthon as a mix of epic rock ‘n roll with symphonic metal, with the use of a lot of samples and melodies that sound as if they have their roots in the Middle East: that is especially strong in the closing epic and lengthy ‘Misterium Babel’ (over eight minutes long). For those who have never heard Hollenthon before: in a way they can have similarities with Therion, because of the use of orchestral passages, classical choir voices, but that is only in a way: Hollenthon does it with a completely different accent, while remaining within their distinctive style of orchestral metal

The opening tunes of ‘On The Wings Of A Dove’ are misleading: with the up-tempo beat, the considerable use of samples choir vocals and horns (instruments, not the gesture) one might think that Hollenthon has indeed finally moved a bit towards Therion (another band hard to categorize): yet that is the opening, and the opening only... On the other hand, because of the use of the choirs in this one, but also in the mighty ‘Once We Were Kings’, ‘Of Splendid Worlds’ and ‘Dying Embers’ (all towards the end of the album) there are similarities regarding the use of choirs and horns supporting the compositions. In the rest of the song(s) it has a more rock ‘n metal approach, especially because of Martin’s raw vocal lines, yet always mixed with the vast use of samples (both regarding vocals and instruments), resulting in that typical epic character of Hollenthon songs.
From that basis the band brings in some variation at the right spots by ‘Ars Moriendi’ and ‘Misterium Babel’, and I think such is a wise decision to enhance the variety of the album. ‘Ars Moriendi’ is the most aggressive piece on this album, with almost thrash-like passages. ‘Misterium Babel’ on the other hand is more laid back than any other track on this album. With the lengthy passages and the prominent use of female voice it has become the most atmospheric and epic song on this "Opus Magnum".
Some of you might have already heard the single ‘Son of Perdition’: a strong single, as it Hollenthon without any doubt, but also has a nice chorus that will appeal to many. And may sound familiar if you know System of a Down (a band of which I am everything but an expert, haha): it’ s that "oeh-thing"... The riff is pretty much straight forward, but the chorus, again supported by the samples is catchy as hell. Let’s hope the single and video will bring the band some additional exposure.

This new CD is well executed, but I think that the album will cost Hollenthon old fans nor yield new fans: even the production is pretty similar to previous albums, although it is a bit heavier. In a way that is a pity as we have moved on seven years regarding recording techniques. When I saw the band performing live recently (at the Dynamo in Eindhoven) the sound was more massive. Perhaps a more massive, modern sound would have made the difference, also to gain new fans in stead of pleasing just the existing fans. Having said that, I must admit that Hollenthon is also one of the few bands that has pretty much of an own distinctive sound, and as such they deserve every support. Hollenthon is back completely , that is the best way to put it!
