I was lucky and found this on ebay by someone who obviously had no idea what a treasure it was. Who could ask for a better combination than the greatest interpreter of the French Romantic tradition and the man who started it all? Guilmant was instrumental (pardon the pun) in bringing about this movement with the help of his friend, the incredible organ builder, Cavaille-Coll. The sonatas represent the highlight of his life's works and their performance rarity is a crime.

Like all "Sonatas" in this genre they are actually organ symphonies, giving a romantic twist to what Bach started with his Preludes & Fugues in E Minor and B Minor. He was close to Joseph Rheinberger, the great Romanic German organ genius and his works seem like Rheinberger Plus. Who but Oosten to do justice to such a set? Just as he did with Widor, Vierne and Dupre, van Oosten delivers a sterling performance of great depth, verve and beauty. These are quite easy to relate to unlike some of the neary atonal works of Vierne. Guilmant was old-fashioned and never thought he was leading a revolution.

The sound is magnificent, just extraordinary. I listened to them with the score in front of me. Again and again I was amazed at how the densest mass of notes were rendered effortlessly. Every sonata has something to recommend to it but the fifth and sixth are standouts. In fract, The first movements of this pair (which seem related in spirit if not bravura) are among the greatest movements in organ history, flowing along as a magnificent avalanche of sound. Oosten, who has won just about every award available and has made it a personal duty to spread the Gospel of the French Romantic shool, always "gets it" whether one is speaking of tempi, registration or volume. Soft passages are crystal clear and massive passages are, well, massive, chordal, grand. This is a recording that should be owned by every lover of organ music. My rating - A+++
