thanks to runo and other friends Review by Scott Yanow Wynton Marsalis' final recording as a member of Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, Keystone 3 finds his brother Branford taking Bobby Watson's place on alto. The remainder of this superb sextet includes tenor saxophonist Bill Pierce, pianist Donald Brown, bassist Charles Fambrough, and the veteran drummer/leader. All concerned sound in top form on both new (Wynton's "Waterfalls" and Watson's "Fuller Love") and old ("In Walked Bud" and "In a Sentimental Mood") material alike. Mostly high-powered hard bop in the best tradition of the Jazz Messengers. |
