QUOTE
Yanni, renown for his stirring and innovative synthesized "new age" music, is one of the most popular composers of instrumental music in the world.  It was only natural that he would write for film one day, and he debuted in 1988 with the feature film Heart of Midnight and HBO's original movie, Steal the Sky.  Steal the Sky is a espionage thriller and romance about an American spy who falls in love with an Iraqi Air Force pilot.   The score has a little of everything--militaristic rhythm, Middle Eastern ethnicity, suspenseful moodiness, and pining love themes--and all stamped with an unmistakable Yanni signature.    The score, of course, is written mostly with electronic sounds and instruments.   The liner notes explain that Yanni does include one acoustic instrument which is featured quite beautifully in the music:  a cimbalom, a Hungarian dulcimer with plucking strings.  The album opens with the percussive title theme, a synthesized action beat supported by an electronic trumpet and other synth tones.  The main theme  is among the most striking parts of the score.  The action cues are especially rousing in "Munir Flies the Jet" and "Munir Lands the Plane."  The Middle Eastern flourishes quickly emerge beginning in "Fountain / Life if Serious", with flute, electronic pianos, and other keyboards playing ethnic tunes.   The Arabic flavors abound in the music, but are always artfully folded into the rest of the music such that they are never stereotypical or stagnant.  Although there is no mistaking the locale of the story, the mainstay of the music is the emotional current of the story, the romance and the drama.  Many of the the dramatic moments, when not veiled by ethnic accents, sound similar to Yanni's usual music.  Some are even reminiscent of his classic songs such as "Santorini" or "Nostalgia."  The "Finale" has a rich, fervent dramatic wrap up that stands out as one of the better cues.  The main militaristic theme and the Middle Eastern cues represent the most film-like music in this composition.  The rest of the music is good, but lacks the pure celebration and limitless imagination he has in his offscreen work.  Overall, the score sounds like the experience was somewhat constrained for Yanni.  However, the difficulty in switching gears is understandable-- this was only his first year at scoring.  Those who don't like the composer or synthesized music would not appreciate the electronic subtleties of this score.  His fans should enjoy this album for a heretofore unheard facet of his creativity.   For film fans, at last, their curiosity for what Yanni would sound like if scoring for film can be satisfied.    Review by Helen San
