"Is you Is (or is you ain't my baby)" is a so-called Jazz standard. Let's say a nice little piece of art from times, when people used to dance to jazzmusic ... back then in the Fourties. Today nobody knows the hyperactive boy called Jazz from the streets of New Orleans anymore. People just recognize him as an honest and motionless nerd. But that's not fair, because in his heart he is still a wild one. All he needs is a little kick in his butt and the calling: "Shake It, Baby". He just can't avoid to discard his intellectual ballast, when Jazz listens to those words sang by Lisa Bassenge, as she did on the new Micatone CD. During the 12 Songs on "Is You Is" he transforms into a specialist for days with black holes, a moodlifter, and a Top-Ten aspirant for all the heart and brain charts made by all people with the necessary taste of music. To cut it short: He turns into a coeval.
It is a rare gift of Micatone, to combine the best of both worlds in a coherent way. It is just intellectual Pop Music. Songs that people should sing loud, without being ashamed. Songs with real instruments. Real instruments, which are self-confident enough to get a little assistance by calculating machines. But eventually we are talking about a band in the classical meaning. And it is nonrelevant for them, to live and work autonomous in the environment of the "Jazzanova" Crew. Always with an eye on the German Jazz DJ Scene.
But Micatone should not only belong to the cases of DJ selectors, they should belong to all of us!
The six young people are on their way. In Portugal people were asking for autographs. Emails from Canadian or Australian fans, turned out to be normal. A growing number of followers in West London. That's why a certain producer named Paul "Seiji" Dolby did a remix for one Track of the last Micatone album Nine Songs (SZCD0001/SZ4005). If remixes would be the modern way of saying "I love you", Micatone are adored by lots of tricky producers in Japan, Austria and England. But also straight instrumentalists find themselves entraped to the sound of Micatone. For example Gerard Presencer, who is a Radiohead collaborator and the trumpeter behind the US3 top hit "Cantaloop". On "Is You Is" you'll find a dreamy solo played by him to the song "To The Sound".
An old rule: A computer is only as smart as the people who use it are. Micatone are non-arrogant musicans. You can hear it. And that's the idea behind their live gigs - it works without hard disk assistance. Because the content finds the right form, and not the other way around. And the results on "Is You Is" straight from the Micatone lab are even more amazing... Humans and machines get along with each other in a very lovely way. You can hear real voices, a powerful double bass and there is also a drum solo. But all in all it sounds different from normal acoustic productions we usually listen to. It's the digital sensitivity of Micatone.
How describe their music? You can choose for yourself ... sincere House music, the consequential continuation of Jamiroquai, Portishead without depressions would be an approach. Or maybe just Jazz. And how the latest standards of jazz sounds like, you can check on "Is You Is"! (Sonar Kollektiv)
