QUOTE | Nils Petter Molvar ER | Emarcy
'ER' – new album, new people Nils Petter Molvar’s new studio album has been christened ‘ER’, and features eight new compositions. From his debut album as a leader with ‘Khmer to his latest live album ‘Streamer’, Nils Petter Molvar is well known for his distinct sound and personal trumpet playing as well as his uncanny ability to fuse electronic elements with organic parts in his vivid compositions.
‘ER’ contains a wide spectre of music expressions from the soft and downbeat to the strong and powerful. Although Nils Petter Molvar has taken a new direction with ‘ER’, his thumbprint recognised from ‘Khmer’, ‘Solid Ether’ and ‘np3’ is still there. On ‘ER’ he has given more creative space to programmers like Knut Savik, DJ Strangefruit, Reidar Skaar and Jan Bang. Says Molvar on his collaborations with the vital producers from the electronica scene: "It’s important to use people in what they’re good at."
Vocal focus We have heard vocal tracks also on Nils Petter Molvar’s previous releases; on ‘ER’ they have been given more space. In the beautiful vocal track Only These Things Count we can hear Sidsel Endresen’s characteristic voice together with Eivind Aarseth on guitar, (a-ha’s) Magne Furuholmen on acoustic piano, Ingebrikt Flaten on acoustic bass and Nils Petter Molvar’s trumpet in a strong and emotional ballade.
Common for the eight tracks is Nils Petter Molvar’s strong visual melodies and his personal and distinctive trumpet playing, which is even more in focus than on his previous records. Some of the productions are slightly toned down to give space for the trumpet and the melodic structures.
Nils Petter Molvar has once again gathered a strong team of musicians and contributors. Eivind Aarseth, Sidsel Endresen, Magne Furuholmen and Ingebrikt Flaten are already mentioned. In addition Rune Arnesen, Erik Honore, Helge Nordbakken and Elin Rosseland participate. DJ Strangefruit, Knut Savik, Jan Bang and Reidar Skaar have, as mentioned, all played a very important role in the production of "ER".
Strong domestic reviews Wrote national Norwegian daily Aftenposten’s Robert Hoftun Gjestad in his ER review last week:
Eight years have passed since ‘Khmer’ was released, the album that surprised most people with it's melodic, techno-inspired jazz. "Khmer" still stands as a pillar in Norwegian music, without Molvar having managed to follow up his beautiful and ground breaking mix on record.
My opinion is that ‘Er’ is the attempt that gets the closest, as the record has a lot of the same organic taste and calm. Electronica is still a central backdrop, but isn't forcing it's way through in a hectic and cold manner.
Instead, Molvar's more muted, and at times rather melancholy, and trusts the moods that build. With beautiful song titles like Softer, Water, Darker, Sober, and Feeder, there is a sense that the expression varies between relaxed and energetic, without disrupting the total impression.
A bonus is the vocal work of Sidsel Endresen, which is especially challenging in Water." ‘Er’ is not a new turning point within Norwegian popular jazz, but it's Molvar from the delightful side. (5/6)
Wrote VG’s Espen A. Hansen in his review:
The trumpeter Nils Petter Molvar has with ‘ER’ created a monster hybrid of an album, which brings the listener along on a dark, rhythmic and bold journey to a musical crossroad where few dare to travel.
Nils Petter Molvar has of course clearly listened to Miles Davis and Jon Hassel, both of whom dared to explore the trumpet's possibilities in ways previously unheard of.
Like them, Molvar is concerned with timbre and moods when he creates modern improvisational music, with elements of jazz, rock, electronica and funk.
The result is urban World Music. The sound is powerful, rough, dark and bold. In the centre, you will always find Molvars trumpet. Some times in the shape of angry, blue daggers. Other times, as a hazy layer of vibrating air.
Other times, like for example on Softer, it moves extremely slowly. Here you will also find gripping dark and rugged ballads like Water and Only these things count, where Sidsel Endresen's voice will send a shiver down your spine.
But Molvar and his impressive ensemble also go in the direction of claustrophobic, noisy and dirty dance music that pulsates through your body.
Nils Petter Molvar's music is advanced popular music, but it's never too strange or impenetrable, just different and exciting.
The best Norwegian album this year? Without a doubt! |
