What makes DRAGONLORD better than most Black Metal bands? I find several things rushing to mind, but the most prevalent characteristic has to be experience. Granted, "Black Wings Of Destiny" is only DRAGONLORD's second effort, but just look at that line-up: guitarist/vocalist Eric Petersen (TESTAMENT), guitarist Steve Smyth (NEVERMORE, ex-TESTAMENT), bassist Derek Ramirez (ex-TESTAMENT), and drummer extraordinaire Jon Allen (SADUS).These guys have been around for a very long time, and it's no small understatement to say that they know what they're doing. In already knowing that each individual brings a load of experience and fine-tuned talent to the table, it should then go without saying that any concerns about DRAGONLORD's musical substance and capabilities are moot and baseless.

Then there's the simple fact that DRAGONLORD is Eric Petersen's black-souled baby; that alone should speak volumes to the strength of the band, considering it was conjured out of the musically masterful mind of a man who is one of the founding fathers of the legendary Bay Area Thrash scene of the early '80s. There was a lot of focus directed towards the virtuoso skills of Alex Skolnick, but Eric did a large percentage of the songwriting, and throughout the past 20+ years has been the unsung musical backbone of TESTAMENT. In turn, it's equally amazing to hear how incredibly different DRAGONLORD's sound varies from TESTAMENT. You'd think that after all these years you'd know what to expect from Eric Petersen and his guitar, but this beast is truly a legend in its own right.

The main contributor to having such a different sound is Eric's obvious and profound respect, admiration, comprehension, and emulation of the Black Metal style, and I don't hesitate to say that Eric and company pull it off better than almost all of them. Categorically DRAGONLORD could be likened most closely to OLD MAN'S CHILD with more melodic tendencies ala ENSLAVED, but with a Metal mastermind like Eric Petersen and an all-star cast of heathens and heretics to back him up, this is predominantly a very distinct interpretation of a well known style.

And the interpretation is stunning, embodying the perfect meld of defining Black Metal tendencies: bold yet melodic keyboard passages that are neither under-played nor over-indulgent; wickedly seething Black Metal snarls with a healthy dose of morose vocal melody; furious, precise, and finely-honed drum bombardments; and the ever-present power of rhythm-saturated, pummeling guitar riffs and rampant solos. All parts are condensed and integrated perfectly, resulting in an end product that is the culmination of years of dedication to the purity of Metal.

Virtually every song on "Black Wings Of Destiny" is a molten Metal monolith, capturing the evil and essence of all things Black. The most distinctly notable tracks include the atmospheric, high-tempo synergy of the epic "Sins Of Allegiance", and the moderately paced Blackened Thrash tones of "Until The End", bearing an ideal example of Petersen's exemplary ability to not only harness the carrion cadences of traditional Black Metal vocal vehemence, but also haunting, other-worldly melodic vocals similar in scope and quality to ENSLAVED and AGATHODAIMON. Also of exceptional note are two particularly high quality covers in the form of MERCYFUL FATE's "Black Funeral" and a seemingly out of place but surprisingly apt Black Metal translation of THIN LIZZY's "Emerald". "Emerald" in particular is an eye-opener to the scope and capabilities of DRAGONLORD, not only converting the song fluidly to a superbly solid Black Metal incantation, but also spotlighting Petersen's surprisingly tenacious grasp on the melodic side of the vocal spectrum; this is definitely one of the album's biggest stunners.

Perhaps if you're not familiar with the DRAGONLORD name or haven't heard the way the band weaves its Black Metal spell, maybe "Black Wings Of Destiny" will catch you by surprise (albeit a good one). However, chances are more likely that this album will cement a fact that is pretty much a given for anyone who is familiar with any one of these musicians: DRAGONLORD may be a "side band" in the most literal sense, but in pure essence DRAGONLORD is absolute Black Metal majesty in all its darkened splendor. "Black Wings Of Destiny" is an epic conjuration of the grandest scale, an advent of increased musical awareness and evolved, proficient delivery capable of casting a dark, lingering shadow that envelops the Metal masses and usher in an era of unending darkness. And so I say unto the massing hordes: Behold! The coming of the DRAGONLORD!
